What drill bit do I use for this simple turned nightmare job?

Use S-shape screw then it will go in offset hole but be in right place at the surface. (jk) seriously maybe you can do it with the screw just not going in totally straight which would probably be only a quite small cosmetic issue probably could ignore as long as the purchase of the screw is good

there could be one nail in a whole wall and Murphy says, you'll probably hit it

hitting electrical is worse especially if your drill shorts them out. never had it happen yet, but it can; but usually electrical sockets etc will clue you in where the wiring likely is
Might try that thanks. Yep Murphy loves me. I am worried about hitting electrical, but looks and seems quite clear of anything like that.

Diablo makes some “multi-material” carbide tipped bits that are supposed to drill through almost anything. Might be worth a try. Also agree you might be hitting a nail or screw head. Drywall and construction screws are both hardened screws

Good porcelain tile (or thick glass) will defeat masonry drill bits, tile drill bits, and cobalt drill bits. I keep a set of diamond drill bits around for drilling real porcelain tile when I want to install handle rails or shower grabs in fancy bathrooms and hot tubs. If someone happened to plate the side of the house with field stone or cut stone and you are hitting a piece of granite you will not make much headway without a stone cutting bit.

I would take a cheap center punch and see what happens to the tip after a few wacks and if it looks like rock dust or something.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Just tear down the whole wall and build it back with conventional materials that are easier to work with.

I think I am hitting either some kind of metal seam or screw head or something. This house in general is cursed or poorly built or something. Seems I can't do any simple task without it becoming a fiasco.

Sounds like something like that. I can't really poke around because now she is anal about the stucco being swiss cheesed. Other than personal victory, I may just stop fighting karma, walk away and let this lady pay for low balling shoddy work and then complaining about it. Who can just stucco over a window and sleep that night? And why?

I do need to up my drill bit game after this. I normally just use 135 degree HSS to poke mild steel or aluminum.

If you have a "Fordham Drill" (cable driven hand set with remotely -on/under the workbench- mounted motor; commonly associated with jewelers, you can ask a dentist for an old carbide bit.
They go through anything.
My dad played with tool making; mostly fabricating wood chisels. He did dabble with metal engraving. The size of the dental bits required his smallest collet.
NOTE: Gotta be a quality tool. The 12v HF cheapie won't do.

Like the ones used for porting? I would love to dabble with such, but not worth this project. I can let her deal with her own unwillingness to compromise and move the planter an inch over any direction, or elsewhere altogether. Maybe that hands off except in the bedroom rich boyfriend of hers can pay to hire a contractor to fix the wall properly, then hang the stinkin planter.

Is cobalt better than Carbide?

Generally yes, but the quality of the drill is more important. I try to avoid Chinese drill bits for serious work.

Next question...how do I avoid Chinese drill bits?
I try to stick to names like Vermont,Irwin and Drill Hog. Am I on the right track?
