While I agree that a small SUV and trailer would be much better for someone who doesn't need the open bed all the time. A truck with a bed topper is just a crappy attempt to convert a truck into a van or SUV.

The Maverick starts at $20K and the Escape starts at $27K, so even without the trailer you are more expensive. On top of that, most people do not want extra vehicles that are just going to it around most of the time. Especially in the suburbs with tiny lots, 1/4 to 1/8th acr lots, a trailer is just going to be taking up space in your already small yard.

It's a compromise, but not a bad one.

Quick search says 1500 for a base Escape and 2000 with the bigger engine. Ranger is 2000 or 4000 with tow package. I'd bet the Maverick tows better though. It's longer and probably has some more towing-friendly design in it.

Looks like they are both pretty close. Escape is 1500, 2000, or 3500lbs based on engine and if it came with factory two package. Maverick is 2000 or 4000 lbs based on engine and factory tow package.

compared base to base they are the same. 2klbs

So if we look at a basic utility trailer at The Tractor Supply they are about 400 lbs with a GVWR of 2K. Puts you at 100lbs over the the payload on the Maverick.

I couldn't find GVWR or CGVWR for either, just going off the numbers on fords website.

Base on the Escape is actualy 2k lbs, with 1.5 3cly. If it's got he Hybrid 2.5 the towing goes down to 1500lbs. I assume this is due to the GVWR and the battery not the capability of the engine.

On the Maverick you can only get the 4K towing if you get the 2.0 awd version and tow package, otherwise you get the 2000lbs limit.

I did the SUV/Utility Trailer combo for quite a while until it was obvious I was pushing the limits of both and it was time to move on.

That combo would not work for me now unless I got a bigger SUV. It was cheaper and a better need fit to go with a truck. Even with the 2019. SUVs are expensive. Not saying that the 2019 was cheap.

That's a pretty heavy and heavy duty trailer for the use and scenario I was replying to. There are plenty of lighter weight trailers out there that will do that job, and still have enough capacity to bring home a new washer or dryer.

Just a reminder the trailer weight is included in the GVRW, so that 400 lb trailer weight would be part of the 2K GVRW. You said Maverick has 2k rating so would not be over. Also it is so the towing vehicle that sets usable GVRW/CGVRW so weight rating of the trailer doesn't matter in your example.

I've got issue with the entire tow rating thing anyway. I don't understand why, but the US market intentionally cripples tow ratings. I can only assume to push people into larger trucks/vehicles. If you take the same car sold in the US market and the European market, the euro market car would have a markedly higher payload/towing capacity. In some cases vehicles with tow ratings over there aren't even rated to tow at all here. I don't know if it still applies today, but it used to.

Any idea how they come up with ratings? I'm pretty sure I've heard of instances where they had something rated for X but slashed that number (without any actual changes) to get into a different vehicle class for tax reasons or something. I bet low ratings are due to some strenuious test... stopping distance from 60mph and max brake temp or something.

Ya know, they make these little things called utility trailers that would work excellent for exactly what you describe doing. Arguably even work better than a truck for what you are doing. They can be purchased for cheap. When properly sized for the task described they could be pulled behind nearly any vehicle with more than three wheels. Sounds like someone needs a/an <insert SVU/car name here> and a small utility trailer more than they need a truck.

That's what I do with my old Ranger now. Got a 4'x8' trailer from Harbor Freight. Think it has a load rating of 1200lbs. It's much easier to load the trailer up with limbs and yard stuff to take to the dump than to put it all in the pickup bed.
