While I agree that a small SUV and trailer would be much better for someone who doesn't need the open bed all the time. A truck with a bed topper is just a crappy attempt to convert a truck into a van or SUV.
The Maverick starts at $20K and the Escape starts at $27K, so even without the trailer you are more expensive. On top of that, most people do not want extra vehicles that are just going to it around most of the time. Especially in the suburbs with tiny lots, 1/4 to 1/8th acr lots, a trailer is just going to be taking up space in your already small yard.
It's a compromise, but not a bad one.
