Went for a drive with the ranger trailer & brought home some straw to put in the chicken run, stopped at my parents on the way home. Dad has been on oxygen for quite a while now, breathing heavily most of the time. He was in the middle of replacing a kitchen sink fixture & had to take a break. So I finished that up & also changed out a shower head for him.

Went to my brothers at first light to look for deer, nothing but a couple squirrels, chipmunks and some birds... then went to work and got a couple things done but left early which was a good thing as 15 minutes before dark I saw a doe and 15' behind her was a spork (spike by fork for those not up on technicals :)) at like 40 yards... Finally got my first deer, conveniently I was able to drive the '97 Ranger up to it to gut it by headlights, didn't do too bad for my first time (I've seen my buddy do it before, I got the concept), I've helped skin before and skinned smaller animals... Between all that and hosing it out then hosing the ranger out then hanging it then pulling the camper off the F350 (need it tomorrow morning) then skinning it then the cleanup (didn't have a tarp or anything good handy to put under it...) it's been a busy evening...

Congrats on the deer. My first deer was back when I was 13, lol. If you can and the weather is cool enough, let it hang a few days, it does make a difference in the meat before you butcher it. Some of the healthiest meat on the planet there, even better for you than chicken…

Congrats on the deer. My uncle tried to teach me to hunt but my hyperactivity put the stop to that. I can't sit still long enough to not spook the game. The last time we went out a group of deer came by and my uncle told me to stay still, well I did my best but I couldn't and rustled some leaves which got the deer's attention. Luckily he's a good shot and got the deer through the throat front to rear as it was looking right at us because of me.

Only thing not on the truck currently are the fog lights. I have the rocker switch for them though if I ever wanted to find and put them back in.

Went to an auction, got more stuff... I limited myself some though...

This time most of the bulk of what I got was plywood for the shop loft floor when I build it. It said in the add and looked like 1 1/8" subfloor but it's 3/4" which will still be sufficient, especially at $180 for 22 sheets... then a couple hammers and a bunch of welding Vise Grip pliers, couple weed burner torches, corded sheet metal shear... that's the bulk of it...

Today I..... didn't do much.

My ATV that I use for hunting is a 2010 Honda Rancher. Bought it second hand about 6-8 years ago. The thing had decent front protection from the factory, but not much on the rear and I knew I'd be driving through brush at the hunting club. With that in mind shortly after purchase I bought a Moose Utilities rear bumper for it. FF several years (~'21) and I decided I wanted the matching front bumper. Wouldn't you know it had been discontinued and out of stock everywhere. I search occasionally hoping that NOS might pop up, but never successful. Also check classifieds regularly for someone that's selling a 4 wheeler and willing to part with the bumper, generally strike out there too or it's too far away to even inquire.

Well got lucky and happened to change my search terms last week and a used one, bumper only, popped up about 1/2 hour the other side of where I hunt at. So hit the road for the hunting club last night, figured I'd get up this morning and hunt, then go get the bumper in early afternoon. Didn't sleep for $h!t last night, never do in that camper and the weather isn;t helping. It's still too hot and I end up lying there sweating all night. Get up this morning and there's a thick fog bank, can't seem more than about 10 yards until after 9am, so no point in heaing to the stand.

So with sleepless night and wasted morning out of the way, I head for town that my bumper is in. Get to town and stop for lunch prior to agreed 1pm meeting time. Get out of the truck (F-250) walk around the back and hear a hissing noise. Picked up a nail between camp and town. Instead of getting lunch I end up fighting with tire shop next door about fixing it. They wouldn't "patch" due to company policy regarding wear and age. I know it's due for then, but I wasn't buying from that place's limited selection and waiting hours for them to be delivered. Finally got them to say that they would do a plug. YES PLEASE! I don't need the tire removed for a patch, I just need it to hold air to get home. Plug is fine, and if I had a kit I'd have done it myself.

Anyhow finally got all that settled, got my bumper, and had an uneventful 2 hour drive back home.

So yeah, this is all I've got to show for this weekend's hunting trip. It's the listing picture and will be cleaned up and painted prior to install. Might even take the time to buy and mount a winch for deer retreval in places I don't want to drive into.

My Son is in the police explorers here and they worked at an adoption event for the local shelter this weekend. He, like his mom and dad, has a soft spot for animals and took a shine to one of the dogs there. Everyone meet Diesel, the newest addition to our zoo!

View attachment 119863

He is one of three pups that were found dumped on a rural road. Other than being severely underweight (we’ll fix that!) he is in good health and is a super sweet dog. He had messed in his crate so Sam helped clean him up and they hung out together through the event. He begged us to let him take him home and because we’re suckers we relented. Oh well no regrets.
I was a Police Explorer Captain.
Good looking pooch. Nice coloration. Is that what they call brindle? If he's a malnourished pup, he's going to be a big boy once he starts eating right.

I was in Boy Scouts in late 90s early 2000s, and got my Eagle in December 2000 at 15. Back then the Explorer and Venture scout programs didn't really have a presence in my area, or I probably would have joined one after I earned eagle. At 15 it would have been perfect timing to move into one of those programs, and since I was close to driving age it wouldn't have been a burden on my family to get me to meetings and events.

Instead I stayed on as a then stayed on with my troop as a Junior Assistant Scountmaster and then Assistant scoutmaster after turning 18. Continued until college and work schedule took up too much time. Then some things in the troop went south, the SHTF nationally with political correctness and scouting, and I was glad I never got back involved. Nice to know that the Explorer (and hopefully Venture) program isn't suffering like the main scouting program.

15' behind her was a spork (spike by fork for those not up on technicals :))
I'm a hunter and "spike by fork" doesn't really help either. I'm guessing that's supposed to be read like lumber size (IE: 1" x 2") which might make a spork a 3 point?

Either way congrats on the harvest. Can't eat the antlers, so any meat is good meat. << I know someone is thinking it, get your mind out of the gutter. :nono:>>

You're doing better than me. I've been to the woods twice this year, only made it into the stand once, and have seen nothing except for the two that dad got last weekend.

Archery and muzzleloader is currently in here, but I haven’t gone out. Been busy trying to get stuff done before winter and it’s been kinda warm so we would have to butcher it right away so neither myself or dad has gone out yet. We prefer to hang the meat and have not built a meat locker yet to be able to do that when the weather is warmer.

It's currently in a game bag hanging in the shop, figure I should probably butcher it on Monday night...

its time to put a cover over the ventilation fan for winter so I found a cover thats weather resistant, dirt cheap & readily available this time of year.

When I look back over the decades, scouting was one of the better things I’ve done. We were a city troop, but we went to camp Towadena (sp?) every year. Learned a lot about life and getting stuff done and it was great getting out of the city. I was saddened when I heard the camp closed and was sold a few years ago

Anyway, summer ended last week, and now it’s fall down here. I left the AC on to deal with the humidity, but winter is coming on Wednesday, I’ll flip to the furnaces Tuesday night.

More of that more than mist but not really raining crap we’ve had the last few days, so hard to work outside. Next project is putting the new distributor in the Lincoln, so I went into the shed of miracles looking for my timing light. I just used it in 1990. I was truly astounded that I walked up to the right box, reached in and pulled it out.

When the Rugrats were here dodging the hurricane a few weeks ago, I pulled out some Christmas decorations to keep the little buggers busy. Looks like I’m going to have a festive Christmas this year…

One of the things I got at the auction yesterday was a log arch thing, one meant for a winch not the chain climbing the incline but it was only $50 (no boat winch or anything but still saves hours of fabrication). It has the dang mobile home wheels on it and one had a blown bead but only like 40 miles from home and the tire barely bulged under it's own weight so I towed it to a gas station, that didn't work at all for whatever reason so I said screw it and just drug it home, made it all the way without any issues!

First thing this morning I reseated the bead, it was crankier than most and I had to actually get a ratchet strap around the tire...

After that I started framing up the other end wall on the firewood lean to, got most of the way done when a coworker came over with his mustang that had a stripped out oil drain plug, from what he was saying Friday I thought it was a steel pan so I was just going to weld a nut to the outside and use a new drain plug but after jacking the thing up I found out it has an aluminum oil pan... the "correct" way would have been to drill it out and put in a helicoil like GM does from the factory but Ford doesn't do... but that wasn't an option with the room available... Conveniently there were like 5 threads left intact in the back so I just ran a tap in quick to get to them and welded a washer on a 12mm bolt to get a flange, worked!

Then had him help me put up the sheet of T111 on the shed wall after cutting to size, still need to put a bunch of screws in that but getting close to done. Conveniently the rain is holding out longer than I expected, will probably go mow the leaves here in a couple minutes...
