My bike did the Bluetooth drive mod like @ericbphoto's motorcycle did last spring... so tonight I replaced the chain.



It will be fun for the first time in decades having a bike I can ride around the campground rather than walking everywhere.

Nice old Trek... back when they were made in the USA.

I kinda got swindled, guy said it was 3-4 years old... after intensive googling after the fact it is actually a '99 model. I think it was only like $150 though, it's in really nice shape.

Kind of funny, I haven't bought a new bike since high school and that one was about the same age as this one.

It's actually big enough for me though, it is the easiest riding bike I have ever ridden. Stupid light too, it's a shame they don't still make 820's with the aluminum frame.

I have a Trek 7000 from about '04... those old aluminum frames are virtually indestructible. Easy and cheap to get parts for and like you said, nice to ride. I've put well over 10k miles on mine and still ride it 3-4x a week. Swimming may be better exercise overall, but I'll take cycling 10 times out of 10 for enjoyment.

I haven't paid attention to bike stuff in a long time but I imagine all they've done is slight improvements to geometry and weight, I'm sure the clutches might be improved in the cassette but for the casual rider I'm pretty sure there's nothing huge...

Back in College I went to the local surplus auctions for fun (go figure) and would buy sections of pallet rack width of bikes/parts for like $20, sell some bikes to people that lived with me and took the rest to my moms, there's still a pile of junk parts and some stuff... My favorite bike I got there was a Nishiki Pueblo, went home for christmas break and took it home to be safe (Mom's in the country) and a bum stole it from in front of the garage! So from there I sorted through my junk and found a Raleigh frame and a random fork and scrounged for derailleurs and wheels and cranks and such, it's a nice bike but I need a suspension fork for it since there's not enough caster without but it rides fine... It's gotta be chromo or something, that frame empty weighs like 2 pounds...

harbor freight has a nice two bike rack that fits in the reciever hitch for about 50 bucks. throw Ollivers bike in the bed and strap yours and Mrs 85's bike on the rack. you are good to go.

Here in a bit they will get cheap on marketplace too...

I really need to find her a better bike. I have her high school bike in the barn. The tires are shot, I bet the chain is shot... by the time you buy tires/tubes and revive it that its kind of a lot of money for in a old Ralleye.

I need to have the thumb shifters looked at on my mountain bike. I haven't ridden on any dirt trails in a while because something is messed up with the shifting of the rear derailer. I suspect the repair is going to be expensive but I'm hoping to get it done this spring so it is usable again. I need to get my road bike into the shop so it can get a good looking over as well. I think it might be ready for some new shifter cables since the shifting seems to be a bit off.

I suspect the repair is going to be expensive but I'm hoping to get it done this spring so it is usable again. I need to get my road bike into the shop so it can get a good looking over as well. I think it might be ready for some new shifter cables since the shifting seems to be a bit off.

Never really sought them out or anything but my last two bikes have been twist shift. I would like to have this one tuned up but I am half scared they will screw it up in hopes of getting me to "upgrade".

I did give it a bath tonight.

Lubing the cables and adjusting the derailleurs isn't rocket surgery... getting them to hold the gears and indicate correctly can be tough though...

Twist shift was all the rage around that time, I don't remember what it's called but I like the one that has a thumb button for one direction and the trigger for the other... I think mine are about done though, I think the indicators went out but I haven't looked in a couple years...

The bike shops have been fair. The last time I had my bikes looked at for general function and a check up, they wanted $80. That was a few years ago. So, I'm sure the price has gone up and they don't replace anything with out permission, beyond shifting and brake cables.

Leaves were shredded and dumped into the garden and I did a quick hack, mow job on the yard now that everything is dry enough to do something with it.

Do you have the thumb shifters with 2 per side, one up and one down? They didn't stick around long but I really like those. If they're Shimano you'd be surprised how tough they are... They do gum up from old grease and dirt though. Ideally you'd take them off the bike but if you flush the heck out of them with brake cleaner and spray some lube in there I bet you'll find the shifters will work well.
If the cables are rusty that's something to consider fixing but I'm betting if you clean and lube the cables and derailleur too, it'll be good as new. If ever every gear is off slightly you can adjust that too.

Hehe I should read ahead (or backwards). I really like those 2-button shifters too. As I just wrote above, I bet you'll find if you clean them they'll work great. I've put over 10k miles on mine and they wouldn't shift at all when I got the bike. In fact I'm sure that's why they listed it for 40 bucks.

If it's an old made in England bike it's worth saving. Might even be valuable.
