What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Got the transmission for the '90 apart, cleaned and 90% assembled and found the cage broken on one of the two pocket bearings for the reverse gear... so in the next couple days I'll try to make it to a trans parts shop and get those and the two iron single use nuts (that've already been reused once...). So I guess I'll just finish cleaning up the tail housing then move to changing the clutch and maybe put the new master cylinder in place...

Replaced the headlights with some Auxito led bulbs on my 2004 Ford Ranger XLT. Without modification to the headlamps or the securing rings, there is only one way for these to be installed into the headlamp to allow the locking rings to hold the headlight in place. Also, the connector "clicked" into place with a secure fit. The cooling fan is so quiet, I had to put my ear on the headlamp to hear it running. I had to make no adjustment to the headlamps. The beam pattern is the same as a standard halogen bulb, but much brighter. I took them for a test drive at night & they provide bright "down the road" lighting, both in low & high beams. I have tried several other LED headlights (with & without controllers) which induced noise in the radio during operation. These were an exact fit replacement for my standard halogen bulbs with no induced radio noise.

Got the old clutch off and the flywheel looks good so a little sanding to deglaze and it will be good to go... took the flywheel off to look into oil leaks and I found them, not what I was hoping for... it's the oil pan gasket, there's a gap at the bottom of the rear main cap and oil pan and the turbo oil supply and oil pressure switch area has a couple leaks which should be fun... of course everything is GROSS, didn't have it in me tonight, will see about dropping the oil pan down enough to clean some and shove some silicone in there, maybe some gasket material in the area with a gap... it's gonna suck but whatever, I'm tired of leaks and I'm this deep in already.

Oh, got the master bolted to the firewall, haven't done the inside part yet...

Thanks for this. Now I'm interested. To be frank, the stock Ranger headlamps aren't very good, but too many members here have had problems with LED replacements.

Took the Ranger yesterday to get supplies for my future garden, including bags of potting soil and mulch. Got a small greenhouse and planters on legs from Lidl. Everything's going to be above ground, except for a short row of pincob corn.

I'm in the city (actually in a residential area) and this will be the best arrangement. My neighbor and I discussed planting yesterday. He suspects the soil around us is poor. Last year his tomatoes did all right, but his peppers didn't produce. Living near chemical plants probably doesn't help. The corn will be planted with a bit of potting soil and fertilizer to account for that.

Nice to have the Ranger to do a bit of hauling as it was designed to do.

Did the drivers side spark plugs, will struggle through the passenger tomorrow.

Also did the fuel filter. What a pain the outflow side was. The bushing rusted onto the old filter and pulled out with it. I had to work it off, took almost 20 minutes. Thankfully all back together with no leaks.

Well, I helped dad a bit with getting most of the prep for replacing the core support on his 99.

Also did some cleaning out of the bed on my green Ranger since it was a total disaster from when it fell off the jackstands. Apparently I had a fairly freshly opened beer sitting on top of my tote with all of my “line” tools (flaring tools, benders, cutters, fittings, etc). So everything was swimming in stale beer and had to be emptied and cleaned. What a mess. But now the bed of the green Ranger has little more than the usual stuff that lives in there.

@sgtsandman, if you’re curious, by cleaning out pretty much everything that doesn’t belong, the rear suspension did go up… by pretty much exactly 1/4” So now I’m about 1.5” between the tire and the top of the rear wheel arch. In the front, I’m at 2.75”, IIRC, so somehow I need to make up the 1.25” difference so it at least sits level.

Those extended shackles you were talking about might do the trick. I didn’t expect the ride height to move much but more than 1/4”.

At lunch today I took the trip into the heart of Portland (unarmed other than pocket knife too, but only one stop...) and got the two bearings for the M5OD and the two nuts so tonight I have so far put the tail housing on, stopping for dinner and will then fill it with ATF then put the top back on so I can button it up, need to order a shifter seal though as that is fried...

Might think about pulling the engine to reseal the oil leaks as it would be a lot easier, it's only four nuts, two fuel lines and some wires away from being out...

Had to open the garage door to get at tools to work on the chicken coop. Little kid wanted to go for a ride so we did a lap around my cornfield. It is kinda soft so after we concluded our ride and got him back in the house and I did the right thing and "circled the section" to blow the mud off the tires. It isn't really a real section. I go west on our gravel road to the state highway, then east southeast two and a half miles to a county highway then north back to my east-west road. Kind of my cruise/test drive route.

I get to the county road with the right of way and there is a leveled maybe slightly lifted new or nearly new white super duty there. Big chrome wheels mostly out of the wheel wells super bright lights etc. He hangs back maybe 3/8 of a mile and leaves me alone for for my two mile trip north to our road which is fine because I had him profiled to be up for doing stupid crap. I check my mirror, he is still a ways back there, signal to turn, get ready to turn and WHOOSH the idiot sped up to pass me and apparently didn't notice I was turning left. Had to be running over 70. Another 50' and he would have taken my bow off.

So I sneaked it back home and put in the garage.

I drove my ranger to work and back home its 10 miles round trip and 20 minutes. My ranger sits for 8 hours and 10 minutes when parked in the work parking lot
