The boilers at my house and my mom's aren't shutting off. We leave the butter on the kitchen counter and this morning it wasn't soft. Tore my toast all to hell.
No idea on our furnace. Turned it down to 65 before I left but it’s a US Steel prefabbed home. So, mine is probably running all the time as well.

Not letting 55 degrees go to waste so I was outside on Dec. 29 at 9:30 pm washing my truck under the street lights. Which is 60 degrees warmer than it was this time last week. Truck was so filthy you didn't even want to touch the door handles to get in.

Changed the oil. Walmart was out of FL-910S filters so I got an FL-400S since I read elsewhere that it's the same thread size, just a little bit longer. Might be a little easier to remove the next time.
$5 rebate on 5 quart jugs of Valvoline Synpower right now.

That's good to know. My Wal-Mart is always out of the 910s here. I've been going to Oriellys just because. Some times they have a deal for 5 quarts and a filter. But never on the synthetic. Plus we need 2 more quarts to fill these things. We'll about 1.25 or so.

The pressure relief valve is higher on the FL-400S, and the micron rating is different. Proceed with caution, especially if your motor is under warranty.

If I understand the filtration, the 400 is better than the 910. So that shouldn’t be a problem.

The higher psi for the pressure relief might an issue though. It’s only 5.5 psi but depending on the system tolerances, 5.5 psi can be a huge difference. The difference between keeping the oil flowing and oil starvation to the engine.

"Better" meaning the filter removes smaller particles of contaminates? That means the filter life for a FL-400 could be less than a FL-910s. That could indeed be a problem. The system is designed based on the FL-910s... why take a chance?

Possibly a shorter life for the filter but it's bigger filter. So maybe not.

I'm not arguing for one filter over the other. I stick with the stock filter or an aftermarket one of about the same quality but never less quality. So, it's no skin in the game for me.

To me, this is just a discussion and information gathering. Keep pointing things. It may help others looking for alternate filters decide to stay stock or not. You may illustrate perfectly as to why it's a bad idea.

Actually the difference in volume between the two filters is 0.85 cu-in, pretty negligible. The FL-400 is 10% larger than the FL-910S

This is all good info. I was curious because of the difficulty of trying to find the 910S in stock locally. Last 2 oil changes i had to wait a day for Oriellys to get my filter. But to take no chances looks like I'll keep waiting the day haha.

FL-910S Specifications:
PSI Relief: 14.5 PSI

PSI Relief: 20 PSI
Micron Rating: 80%@20um
So the 910 filters 50% of particles 35 microns and larger and the 400 filters 80% of particles 20 microns and larger and doesn't go into bypass until it hits a higher pressure. Sounds like a better filter.
Google took me to a few Focus, Fiesta, and Mustang boards where people are using the 400 instead of the 910 with no issues.

As long as the pump is able to push out enough pressure to over come the higher psi requirement of the bypass valve. It should be able to with no problem but something to note.

Couple guys on the Focus and Fiesta boards who claim to be engineers and sound like they know what they’re talking about said it’s not an issue with a positive displacement pump like an oil pump. Only might be a problem if you go a really long time between oil changes and the filter gets really dirty.

Like 10,000 mile/once a year oil changes.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

That's the thing. You don't want the bypass to open because then you are no longer filtering your oil. So filter changes before they get that clogged are important.

I'm not sure of the oil flow path. Dies it normally go "pump>filter>engine>return"? Or is the filter in the return path. I would hope filter is first thing after the pump as I put it above. So, ideally, you would want a pressure gauge between pump and filter so you can know if you're getting close to bypass pressure; ie; clogged filter. Otherwise, we're just guessing about whether or not we ever get the filter that dirty.
