Stuff like than makes we want to install off road bumpers more and more. They might not be completely crash proof but the more damage that happens to them and the less to me the better.

Its probably better to be self deprecating than self defecating.
Stuff like than makes we want to install off road bumpers more and more. They might not be completely crash proof but the more damage that happens to them and the less to me the better.
By making your bumper less pliable, id imagine that you increase your chances of potentially receiving a bent frame in that sort of situation.. rather than just a twisted up bumper and mabey some bed/tailgate damage.

By making your bumper less pliable, id imagine that you increase your chances of potentially receiving a bent frame in that sort of situation.. rather than just a twisted up bumper and mabey some bed/tailgate damage.
If we want to get scientific we can figure out how thick we can make a bumper before it becomes too strong.

If we want to get scientific we can figure out how thick we can make a bumper before it becomes too strong.
Too much thinking and work involved in that process. Let's stick with assumptions, "seat of the pants engineering" and conjecture.

So I should replace the the frame rail with Bar stock to be safe?
Absolutely. Replace the entire frame, front to back with 2 1/2" x 6" solid bar stock.

What about C channel turned upside down, with caps on the end and mesh on the top. That way it collects a bunch of water and salt, and can't be cleaned.

So, the solid bar stock won't catch dirt and it would take a 100 years to rust through plus, it's sheer mass would significantly lower the center of gravity and help prevent the truck from flipping over.

One problem with Fords factory "tow hitch" is it is integral with the bumper. So in this case, the damage to the hitch, pushed the bumper crooked.

I like the integral design because it doesn't look like an afterthought hanging down low.... but if it had been just a bolt on hitch... repairs would be much less expensive. I'm anticipating it'll be a $2,500+ repair. We're planning to get an estimate early this week.
