First post here so hi everyone ??. I just picked up this 1989 bronco 2 ranger conversion.I decoded the vin and it originally came with the 2.9 v6.... but the engine in it is not the 2.9 so someone swapped the engine along with the conversion . Could anyone help me identify what engine I have in this. Thanks for the help!

Pretty cool truck...

I believe what you have there is a 4.0L OHV

EDIT… got beat to it. I don't have a photo graphic memory. There are a couple members here that will know exactly the year just with a peek.

Awesome thanks for the info so far. I was thinking it was a 4.0 ohv from some research I have been doing but figured I would verify with some people that have more knowledge in these than me.

Pretty excited about the truck. The guy I bought it from did not know what he had because he traded into it and he just wanted to sell it so I picked it up for $1000. Runs, drives, 4x4 works and has a clean title. So I knew I could not go wrong on this deal.

Looks like a early 90s 4.0. IIRC, they went to a plastic intake manifold in later years.

Any chance you can shoot us a photo of the tags on your ecm? Should be behind the kick panel on the passenger side.

Yes I will take a picture of the ecm tags tonight when I get home from work and post it.

Nice score. I had a b2 with a 4.0l/5-spd/3.73 with 31"x8.50x15". It was a great little truck.

Yup, 4.0 swapped Truggy.

I can't see the details needed for a year ID. I can tell you it is federal emissions, sometime 94 or earlier, not out of a 94 Explorer.

94 Explorer had EGR, this doesn't.

90-92 at least, and I think 93 as well had a smooth pulley on the tensioner, I think 94 moved to the later style tensioner that points down and has a grooved pulley, but that is all the closer you need to be to buy the right parts.

EDIT: Just looked at the last picture again, it has the earlier style. I'd say run the VIN on the cab, which is probably the Ranger that engine came out of.

Lots of great info thank you! I will look at the tensioner tomorrow and see which one it is. I decoded the vin and it says it had the 2.9 v6 originally.

The engine has the grooves pulley pointing down

Well, your EEC-IV is a 1992, and one of the more unique ones out there. It's been used to run the 4.0 OHV, 2.3, and 2.5 Lima.

Not sure what vehicle it's from, I'd have to research the part number. But if I were a betting man, I'd guess it matches the engine.

@AllanD shared some info on it:

Good call @adsm08. Not an Explorer donor, and a non egr ecm.

Also, a Google search reveals the Lima use for.it. Seems there's some tuning options available for.that one. Good score. ??

That's the same tensioner setup I have on my '94 4.0L (a friend's '93 has the tensioner above, between the alt & A/C comp).
It seems likely you have a '94 engine with a '92 ECU.

Cool truck though for sure. Nice score

So I am having a issue with this 4.0. This thing is so cold natured that it can’t be driven until it is warmer temps later in the day.

Engine starts up and idles perfect. When i give it any throttle at all it will spit and sputter then die if I don’t let off soon enough. When outside temps are wamer in the afternoon the issue is barely noticeable at all.

Cleaned maf , cleaned IAC and put in new air filter.

Any other suggestions to fix this thing ?
