I have a 96 ranger xlt with the 4.0 L 4x4. The wheel bearing is going out I need to replace it but, I don't know what axle I have. Its either a dana 28 or 35 I believe. How can I tell without taking the whole thing apart first?

Either one of those by itself rules out a Dana 28.

For the purpose of the wheel bearings, and anything outboard of the axle-shaft U-joint the last year for the 28 was 1990. The 4.0 always had a D-35 though.

I've gotten that stupid question at the auto parts stores... I usually even ask for parts for a '92 Explorer to try to weed that crap out, they're still just as clueless...

If it still has the factory installed axle, the code from the sticker in the drivers door jamb will have that info. Or my experience is, there is a small metal tag attached to one of the bolts on the diff cover, info on that will have diff size (7.5 or 8.8) and gear ratio. There are links in the forum to decipher the coding.
