I FOUND THE SMELL! Not on the car but in the food court. Someone dunked some fries in a deep fryer with oil that was overdue for a change. Had the exact smell I’m hunting for.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

While you were not looking, someone converted your engine to biodiesel.

May I vent here? I need to vent. I attempted a TPS change just now. I figured no sweat. Quick change just like IAC valve. Nope. One bolt is hidden behind the EGR mount so I had to remove the throttle body. To remove the throttle body I had to remove the upper intake plenum. Then the bolts turned out to be rusted screws that had no structural integrity in the head. So now I have to ask the shop at work to see if they have a tap tomorrow… and I have to get my wife to drop me off.

Every job on these old trucks is on snapped bolt away from a short project to being several days. If you have a 4X4 with a V6, just wait until you need to work on the clutch. Good times, had by none.

We al want everything to go quick and easy, but calm, slow and deliberate is the only way to win when things go south. You’ll get it. 👍

I poop in the furnace.
I can take any smell as long as it doesn't smell like urine or poop. Lol.
Hmmmmm never poured clam chowdah in your air vents and let it sit for 2 months in summer I see...

Yeah, the DPFE blocks the screws for the TPS. I just put a new BBK 56 mm throttle body on mine, so I feel your pain. Took an hour. No broken or rusty screws or bolts though. Considering I live in Oklahoma, and this thing see rain you can hardly see though, with a bunch of holes in the hood overtop the intake manifold under a scoop. I got lucky.

Mine kind of has a funny exhaust smell. I suspect the cat isn't doing it's thing any longer. Doesn't rattle or make any noise, Exhaust just smells strong. Ah well, it's a 98. Runs swell. CEL is blocked from view. I'll just keep on driving it.

I'll send you a jar of my exhaust and you can tell us if it smells like yours.

On both of my 5.0L explorers the valve covers leak oil onto the exhaust manifolds, that isn't the most pleasant smell...

I wonder if oil getting on the clutch would cause a stink.

Sounds like brakes, maybe one sticking.......it would happen more/quicker when making multiple stops often, like ciry driving, neighborhood driving etc, lots of starts and stops etc... it smells very industrial....look for smoke coming from any of your wheels.....just yesterday a guy in the store parking lot had a smoking front left brake, smells weird and nasty lol

Sticking brakes? I know it happens, but never to me. So far! On any of my three "cages" I can stick my foot out the open door and push them with just one foot. If I couldn't do that, I'd be suspicious.
