Swapping my M5OD-R1 for an M5OD-R1HD

Write up in progress, and lots more pics to come.

And for the nay-sayers, this is a BOLT IN swap, other than the shifter that I had to cut and turn 90 degrees.

I used an R1 slave cylinder, not an R1HD, they have different hydraulic lines.

Bolt pattern fits perfectly.

Inputs are identical.

Tail housings are identical in bolt patterns, had no problem bolting up my BW1354 E.

Dimensions are all identical.

Shift stubs are not the same, HAVE to use the HD shift stub. Consequently the shifter is different, so use a newer shifter, or do like I did and cut, turn and weld it again.

Any questions feel free to ask, but like I said, Ill do a write up in a couple days.

What is the HD out of? And what is the shift stub?

I don't see how your modified shifter is solving your problem, it looks like the shifter is going to end up sitting under the drivers legs and ending next to the door...

other than the shifter retaining notch turning 90*, I don't think there's been any differences in the M5OD's other than the higher first and second gear ratio in the 4.0 versions. I just found out about the shifter notch turning when I went to the junk yard to grab newer shifter bushings since mine were literally non existent.

The M5OD-R1 HD I used I got from a wrecked 2006 Ford Ranger, 4.0 4x4. It only had 42 000 km on it. I got the tranny for 500$, not much more than the cost of getting syncros and bearings to my door to rebuild my R1.

Look at this pic:

The notch is turned 90 degrees, so buy cutting and turning my shifter 90 degrees, it puts it back to where it was STOCK.

The HD has a different first and second gear, with bigger syncros.

Swap is done, and it is like night and day. Throws are shorter and crisper, syncros work beautifully, and no bearing noise :)

Ill post a DIY tonight.

Random question, been wondering this for a while and just remembered to ask.

Is it the exact same tranny used on the 3.0l engine too? (except for slightly different gearing). I guess a better way to put it is will a M5OD from a 4.0 bolt up to a 3.0?

no, it will not bolt up. The M5OD trannies have an integrated bell housing, and as such, the bolt pattern on a 4.0 tranny will not match that of a 3.0 engine, and vice versa.
