Hope this hasn't been posted before but couldn't find anything specific. So one of the little draw backs of the Lima series is IMHO is the weight so anyone with any incite on the differences of the cast iron 2.3 pumps vs the 2.5v aluminium?

Sometimes you take all you can get LOL. I only found out about the aluminum one when my son's truck fan came apart and cracked the pump.

So should have included this. I compared the 2 and the 2.5 pump appears to be almost 3/8 inch longer and the impeller when I tried the 2.5 on the 2.3 touched #1 cylinder. Was hoping someone knew if it would fit or not and if not what differences there were in the 2 blocks. Far as I knew the mains were smaller but that was the only significant difference.

The front of the engine went for a redesign for '96 getting the oil pump behind the aux pulley and a couple other things so that's probably when the water pump changed. The 2.5L is identical to a '96+ 2.3L except for the crank, rods and pistons as far as I've heard. The smaller mains started in '86 if memory serves...

I haven't changed a water pump since I put my '90's 2.3L together like 4 years ago and I've only had my '97 for a year and a half so I'm not familiar with the newer stuff yet... you might be able to get away with spacing it out a little and running the front end stuff from a newer engine to work with the belt alignment...
