I wanted to replace the water pump in a recent engine tear down. When I when I went to install it I realized the connection for the bypass hose was not there. There was no hole in the water pump for the stub pipe or any indication of any attempt to have one there. I am guessing it was a manufacturing error.

I had to put the old one back on and fortunately it is still good condition with 254K miles on it.

It is an 02 4.0 SOHC. I ordered a water pump for that Ranger engine. The new water pump was identical to my old one but was missing the bypass hose port.

I finally figured out what happened. Ford part websites show the part number for the water pump I got as fitting my vehicle. Some of them have an optional part number for another water pump that also shows it fits my vehicle. The website I ordered from does not list the optional part number, but if I do a search on that optional part number it pops up and indicates it also fits my vehicle.

So, it was not a manufacturing error, it was a website error. Can it be one can't trust the internet? :)
