Deengineer until it is how Blue Oval should have sold it!!
This has never happened to me before. After replacing a ruptured power steering line and servicing it up, I have water in the reservoir.

Should just drain it, then fill it and run it a second, then drain again until clear?

I'd have a large quantity of ATF on hand, drain it, cap the bottom fitting on the res, have the return line in a bucket and crank the engine while adding fluid. You don't want to get that stuff in the pump, the pump can get the ATF and water to mix, then you are screwed.

Unfortunately the pump mixed it before I realized there was water; it looks like chocolate milk.

My plan is to:

1. drain the reservoir.
2. remove both the pressure and return lines.
3. with the front end up with the frame on jack stands, turn the wheel to the stops at left and right, evacuating the gearbox.
4. dump a pint or so 97% isoa-lcohol into the gearbox to flush it, repeating turning to the stops.
5. fill the gearbox with Hyd and repeat several times until it looks free of water.
6. another iso-alcohol rinse.
7. service it up with steering fluid.
8. do the same with the reservoir

I like you idea to provide a large supply of fluid to the pump, to clear it. I will need an assistant, I'm sure (my remote switch is on the fritz).

I hope that I do not need to pull the pump or gearbox but if necessary...

I wouldn't put alcohol in there. It can dry out or damage seals, and doesn't lubricate anything but lips. If some gets left in it can also cause the fluid to start breaking down.

I'd still try cranking it with the return line off to try and just push it all through.

Adam,

Rodger on the iso 👍👍👍

So far that ATF was a very good suggestion. I happen to have came upon 12 qts of type F, some time ago. It is good to see the flow change from tan to BLOOD RED. The gearbox is done, just went into work on the pump.

The process went well except that I only replaced the failed return line, I should've known better. During the 1st mile of the maiden drive the pressure line blew???

ALWAYS REPLACE THEM TOGETHER ..)
