Hey guys!

I'm looking to turn my 1996 ranger into a DD prerunner that I can have fun in, like the style of, and bomb down some dirt or gravel roads in! (I live in Michigan so that's pretty much all we have.)

I don't need long travel suspension yet so I'm planning on just getting a 4" lift for now.

I want to run 33 x 12.5 x 15's on a 15 x 8 inch rim but with a 6 inch bulge front and rear fiberglass kit from McNeil racing. I don't know what amount of back spacing I'm going to need to run on the wheels to not make it look dumb.

It's a 2.3l so I'm not planning on going fast or anything yet but I hope to one day do the 5.0 explore swap.

Keep in mind that all this will happen over the coarse of 3 or 4 years, probably starting with the 4" lift and 33's and then the fiberglass, then the new suspension (long travel), then the v8 swap.

But back to the wheels, what backspacing should I run for 6" bulge fenders?

I do want to eventually take the truck up to the dunes here in Michigan so before anyone says that I just want to be a prerunner poser (kinda true) I really do plan on having some real fun in it and make it something that I'm not worried about other truck drivers saying I'm not driving a "real truck" and just be in something that I'm proud of and wanting to drive!

I currently just don't like the look of my ranger and it has some rust on the bed on the wheel arches. I think that its just not as aggressive as I want it to be but I love it, the community and whatnot but it needs a new look! (I don't want to "just get a bigger truck like an F-150 if you don't think its aggressive enough" like some will say.)

I'm well aware of the danger to the wheel bearings and how scrub works and whatnot. I might be young but I'm not dumb. (maybe a little bit, but at least I have passion and want to work on stuff and learn!)

ANYWAY! Backspacing! What should I run?

(My truck is basically bone stock right now by the way!)

(1996 Ford Ranger XLT, 2WD, Regular cab, Long bed, 3.75 gears? (not sure but thats what it says on the axle tag), 2.3l 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual transmission!) (Its the Teal color if you really want to know everything!)

I really don't intend to rain on your parade, but are you sure you can move the wheels out that far with backspace?

tape a couple pages of graph paper together, get some measurements of your truck. grab a ruler and start drawing the current wheel, hub, and body positions. a 1 to 4 scale drawing of a 6' wide truck is only 18" . you should be able to get very accurate dimensions to see what can be moved and how far.

have fun

See that's the problem.

I was thinking that I might have to get something like 2 inches of back spacing and that would put me about 2 inches from the outside of the new fenders!

I guess at that point I could just run a 1 inch spacer in the front and back and then that would put me about 1 inch from the outside so that would be good for when I get the long travel kit so I can still have some travel, and allow the tire to tuck into the fender!

I actually did make a diagram like you said and I'm looking at 1 inch of gap with 2 inches of backspacing and a 1 inch spacer. (I just took all the measurements in inches and then just used 1 centimeters to represent an inch.)

I just don't know whether it will look good or not!

This is what I made!

ranger pic - Copy.JPG

Just make the backspacing 2 inches and then put a 1 inch spacer in there too.

That will leave me with 1 inch between the fender and tire.

I just don't know what looks good!

Would anybody be able to send some pictures of their prerunner ranger and show me your setup?

Tell me what size tires and fender sizes you have?

(If you can just tell me your whole setup would be cool too!!!)

I ran 33x12.5x15 on 10x15 wheels with Fiberwerx fiberglass front fenders. I believe mine were only a 3-inch bulge.

Nice!!!

I love it man!!!

I'm looking for something a little more agressive though...

I took some measurments and I think I might do the 4 inch TT style in the rear and 6 inch in the front with a 1 inch spacer and 3 to 3.5 inches of backspacing and no spacer in the rear.

I'm going to do the 33x12.5x15 BFgoodrich A/T on a 15x8.

If anyone has more pictures I'd love to see what you have!

I'm just trying to find the setup that will make my truck look the way I really want it too.

That wide front track and flush rear.

Kinda like this picture that I found in google images!

I really like this look and I would want the 5 light cage on the roof too!

My truck is the long bed regular cab though...

After looking around some more, I was wondering if the regular cab long bed is something that people even turn into a prerunner... I'm still going to do this to my truck because I want it to be a little different but if anyone has a pic of a long bed regular cab ranger prerunner that you would be willing to share with me that would be great!!! thanks!!!

stumbled across this thread and thought id ask about something myself even though its been inactive for a bit. If i plan to put 1992 F150 TTB and rear axle on my 1992 ranger xlt extended cab how wide would my fenders need to be? The "1983 to 1997 Ranger 4×4 to Model 44 pivot brackets" from Autofab say that the front end will be 8in wider than before so what size fenders could i get away with, the only bedsides i can find that allow for the factory 1992 taillights is from McNeil racing and its only a 6in wide bedside, would it work or would i need a smaller rear axle/ wider bedsides. id rather not have to buy both the 6in and 8in just so i can splice the taillight housing from the 6in onto the 8in due to the 8in only allowing the new taillights. any helps apreciated.
