Have hit a point where it's going to be cheaper in the long run for me to buy a old and sorta good mill and lathe versus paying someone to do my machine work.

If you have one, or both, I'm interested. Been searching locally, but figured it wouldn't hurt to put a want ad up as well

Get a Bridgeport, a kurt vice (anything but a kurt is garbage), a rotary table, a good set of dial indicators to set it up and a pile of good 4 flute center cutting end mills. You'll also need a set of collets (never use a chuck). A power feed on at least the x axis and a DRO if you wanna do anything precise.

A hold down set, angle blocks, vice shims, pin gauges, various center and edge finders, a coolant mister, and the machinist black book are all also some standard accessories you'll need.

A Bridgeport with a rotary table will do almost anything a lathe can. If you still want a good cheap lathe get a 10" southbend HD.

I ran a Bridgeport in college, we had rows of them. They are good but after a quick check locally... you pay dearly for them.

A "serviceable" full manual birdgeport can be found for around 2 grand, I've found them for 500 bucks if your willing to rebuild some stuff. You will pay extra for stuff like variable speed, power feeds, power draw bar, etc. And if it has a CNC computer it will be astronomical.

Anything smaller than a Bridgeport is worthless IMO, and Bridgeports haven't changed in a century. Parts are readily available and they freaking work. I have one at home and 3 at work.

Keep in mind you need 3 phase power... I use a phase converter at home and they are not cheap. My phase converter cost almost as much as my Bridgeport did. Machining is not a cheap hobby though. One end mill is gonna run you 20-50 bucks. :icon_rofl:

Shop has three phase in every room, so no worries there.

Point me at one of these $500 bridgeports!

Look up Quaker city auctions. That's where I got tons of my equipment. Get into the "auction scene" these places like quaker city come in and liquidate shops and factories. You gotta spend time but its fun... and you always come home with some cheap garbage.

I only own one. The others are shop property.

I'd sell you mine for $18,000. It was resurfaced in 2015 with all new leads. And I have power x,y,z+power knee. Power draw bar, variable speed, and a plotting dro.

I have a running 4.0 OHV. Has some urine stains. Seems like a fair trade.
