valve slap??

morning,
03 4.0 a/t 4wd 110k , did timing chain guides, de-carboned heads, valves, pistons, replaced cranks bearings, cleaned wrist pins of burnt oil. The truck had jumped time, overheated, all the bad mojo at one time. valve seats held fluid, no visible bends, did have one gash one #1 but not deep. expected.
So after all that setting the timing (without ford tool) i have piston slap i believe. setting timing every reference shows tdc. then set cams, lock and tighten up. ran compression gauge for #1 set and tightened. should i have gone 10 degrees before tdc?
thanks in advance, again every reference has shown tdc.... alot of work for a noisy engine.

Did you pull all the valves and thouroughly inspect them?

That was alot of work to not have sent those heads out to be inspected and reconditioned. Any case of valve to piston interference I've ever seen has bent the valve.

No i didnt pull them, i did pour fuel into the bowel and check for seepage and had none. and visual, nothing noticeable. may have a little slack on the pull side of the timing gear but my god it isnt much couldnt account for 2 Degrees. I did this with the change in my pocket which isnt much, why the heads werent inspected or resurfaced. and valves and springs replaced. this motor has been babied i drive maybe 20 miles a week. for the money i can replace the motor with a 5.0 or another 4.0. hoping it was just not setting the timing at 10 degrees before.

It seems to me that you do not have the timing of the cam correct. Even if you have a slightly bent valve it would not slap the piston. It would just leak compression and the engine would not have full power.

I have not done the guide replacement yet at 242K miles, but I understand that it is not easy to get the cam timing right even when the correct tool is used. Many mechanics will not take this on because of the exact procedure required get it right. So, if you did it without the proper tool, you would have to be very lucky to get it right.
