Valve adjustment

Can someone direct me to the procedure for 2.9 valve adjustment? I can't honestly recall when I assembled the engine if I soaked lifters or not, I'm going with yes. Anyhow, when the truck is "cold" started (basically overnight) I get a decent amount of valve/lifter noise for 5-15 seconds of run time. Wondering if I have them too tight, and causing lifters to bleed down too much when it sits? I took lash out and turned in 1.5 turns, with an angle gauge, I have not doubts about my setting, but I wonder if doing it cold or if lifters were soaked or not caused too much difference? Seems to run 100% fine after the initial 10 seconds.. any suggestions?

I need to find my service manual I bought on CD. I was looking a couple days ago. My desk is a mess.

I know when I start my 2.9L... she clatters a little until oil gets pumped up top. It's pretty quiet when warm.

Same but it clatters more than I care for. I feel like something must be wrong. Competition Engine who built the short block recommended 15w-40 which I know is thick but it may only take a second or two away from the noise/lubrication. No way a NEW engine had valvetrain noise in the 80's in a production vehicle so I had to do something wrong...

Those CD manuals are good to have. I got one in 2006 right after buying my 93 for $6 and it covers every Ford truck and SUV for 93-94.
When I got the Explorer it wasn't long before I had one for it
They are not difficult to use but earlier ones (such as my 93-94) were in shops before Windows 95 was even on the market. Understanding that goes a long ways into using it productively

I think both Ford.
I bought one off Ebay after getting the 93 Ranger in 2006 and it was an all green CD/DVD with a blue Ford button, spitin image of the one on my tailgate.
After I bought the 96 Explorer I got one for it but I'm not positive was Ebay or Amazon, I'm not sure. Although I see no Ford brand I put it in the disc player to see what it did and it asked different levels, one was Fordstar, but I did go with the install I use those on an old offline shop computer

One thing I didn't realize for years but the one I got for the 93-94 Ranger I thought was specific to those models but later found in the index it covers every truck and SUV made by Ford those years.

The second one for the Explorer does the same
The first one I got was $6, the second one I'm certain less than 10 and they are complete in every way right down to every nut and bolt.
In fact these I have are the very ones used in the Ford Repair shops

Well I was up early and dug deep into my messy desk and found my CD.

The problem I have now is my computer asked me... what would you like to do with the blank disc. No idea how the information got wiped from it... but it's blank.

That said... I wasn't super happy with the content. It seemed to be lacking a couple things I went looking for. I know one thing was window glass adjustment and any power window information in general.

It was a large .pdf file... it was searchable but it was clunky.

I'm going to look for something better to replace it.

@Uncle Gump my experience with the power windows is get manual ones. I’ll look around for a disk and see what info it has. That said, I got to find a computer that still accepts them too…

If it really needs 15w40 they set it up way too loose.

Maybe it is not wiped, maybe your newer machine simply refuses to see it.
I have an older computer specifically for older file types, in fact my 93-94 cd was written and published before Windows 95 had even been heard of

Pull the rocker shafts and knock the welch plugs out and clean the sludge out of the inside of the shafts and clean out the pushrods, replace the plugs and reassemble and readjust the valves. Also inspect your rocker arm pads for excessive wear they can be resurfaced by a good machine shop.

Put the lifter on the base circle, tighten/loosen to 0 lash, add 2 FULL TURNS. As per ancient tsb. Keeps mine quiet at all times. Also helps if your engine makes more than 5psi oil pressure at hot idle.
