V6 To v8 swap 1 wire Starter wiring?

Hi

Im finishing my 4.0 to 5.0 swap and I dont know how to hook the 1 wire starter. My stock ranger 4.0 1995 has the starter solenoid wired to a 2 wires starter.
Anyone knows how to wire a 1 wire starter?

What year is the V8 and its starter motor?

The older starter motors just had the one LARGE battery cable from relay(solenoid) to starter

If you have the older model then you will need to do some rewiring at the relay(solenoid) in your picture

You see the two wires in the broken rubber boot, well one should be larger, a cable, and the other a wire
Both of those ran to the newer style starter motor on the 4.0l
You need to remove BOTH of those from the relay(solenoid)

You will not be using the smaller wire that's by itself on the relay, you will be connecting the other larger cable where the smaller one is now, by itself
Then the other end of that larger cable connects to the 1 connection on the starter motor

So the top graphic is what you want to end up with

Mine is 1 wire 1980 starter. but Is not wire like the bottom one in your pic. Mine is a 3 pin solenoid.

First lets speak the same language
The starter Solenoid is on the top of the starter motor, it moves the starter gear out to engage the ring gear
Solenoids MOVE things

On the inner fender is the starter Relay, it sends voltage when activated
Relays connect electrical circuits
So the thing on the inner fender is a relay, but was called a solenoid for many many years, it ain't its a relay, lol

Yes, the "I" post was dropped on starter relays so they are all 3 post now, "I" was for the spark coil

The smaller "S" post on the relay in your picture gets 12v with key turn to START, and that activates the relay

Battery------(cable)----------relay------(cable)-----------starter motor(one "wire" starter motor)


Then Ford switched to a new starter motor with a combo relay/solenoid on top, so they didn't need the inner fender relay any more, starter motor has the "S" post and positive battery cable, so two wire

Then in Ford's infinite wisdom, and because they were stuck with a BOAT LOAD of these 3 wire fender relays, they decided to use them up
And thats the lower drawing in the above graphic
The fender relay is not needed any more and it did go away, when they ran out of them, lol

So which starter motor to you have?

Solenoid only, 1 wire

Or combo relay/solenoid, 2 wire

They look way different

Mine is a 1 wire from 1980. And my ranger v6 1995 had a 2 wires starter. So I need to hook my 1 wire starter the easiest way possible. My solenoid has 3 ports. I posted the photo

So you need to move the 1 larger cable(one in rubber boot) on the 3 post relay to the other larger post on that relay
Then connect the moved cable to the starter motor's 1 connection

And that's it

Then it will look like the wiring in the upper drawing
