Like the title says: I want to use the factory in-dash tachometer with a carb and distributor 302. Is it possible? All I can find is how to install aftermarket tach in a computer controlled vehicle.

Not on a 1993 cluster

On the 1996 and up you just needed to change a ground pin on the cluster
1994 and earlier didn't have that option

Computer controlled wasn't any different until Clusters went Digital, 2004 in Rangers
Points, Spark module or computer used the same tach signals, ground pulse for coil(s)

But...........there are other options
Get a 1987-1993 F-150 cluster from a V8 and swap that tach into your cluster
Some of the 1st generation Explorer, 1990-1994, cluster's had a jumper on the back for V6 or V8, but not all, so longshot in finding one, but they are out there
OR
Dakota Digital makes the SGI-100BT, its a speed AND tach interface
I have used it for a speed calibrator, no complaints
But it is $100

You would run the coil "-" or tach output of your spark module to this unit, then a wire out to the cluster, pin 8 on the cluster, a tan/yellow stripe wire

Instructions for the 100BT here: https://www.dakotadigital.com/pdf/SGI-100BT.pdf
Page 12 is the tach info

This is a 1994 diagram but 1993 is the same
Your 2.3l cluster wouldn't have the ground wire on pin 9, that was V6 only, but if using the interface that shouldn't matter

Is that a plug and play swap? No mounting issues or rewiring? This sounds like the easiest solution.

I am glad someone asked this question. I was going to ask it or was thinking the same thought. V8 swap into a V6 1990 truck? i am guessing its a no go also?

Not wanting to hi-jack thread, but still same topic. cheers

Nice find, Ron! Looks like a trip to the salvage yard is in order.
