using an LCD TV as a computer monitor?

My kids has a 19” Toshiba LCD TV in there room (so I could mount it and keep troll prints off of it). I’m getting a used PC for free here soon, which it may have S-vid out and most likely standard VGA monitor connection. Is it possible to use their TV as a monitor?

Sure is. My desktop monitor is a 27 inch RCA that walmart had super cheap. That one even had the vga input. I use my laptop hooked to the living room tv via HDMI all the time too.

^Absolutely. I've got my 42" plasma hooked to my computer. Its fan-frickin-tastic.

The only issue is what connections are on the TV and the PC. To get a truly usable set up you need to use either VGA or DVI/HDMI, S Video is absolutely horrible for PC usage.

the quality on a big tv isn't good enough in my opinion... the 1080p tv's aren't bad... but i've hdmi out from my laptop to my 32" 720p tv, and the quality is lacking... not impressed... computer monitors have higher resolution that tv's typically, because you read on them, rather than looking at pictures typically... as when you're reading, you have to focus on a much smaller area...

but to answer your question, yes it will work... i don't like it for forum useage, or most internet related activities, though watching youtube or streaming video it works awesome!

While your points are true he's talking a 19" TV which is probably 1366x768 while a 19" PC moniotr is 1440 x 900, not a huge difference. I've used my 42" 1080p TV at a close distance (about a foot farther than my 22" 1680 x 1050 monitor) and didn't mind the low res/size ratio.

good point... you wouldn't notice much different on the 19" ones... though i will say that the 42" probably has the same pixel size as my 32, and it sucked balls
