Guys, has anyone heard of or seen someone run a diesel on used oil? I mean used engine oil, used gear oil. I have means of filtering it really well, and also have plenty of it, we fill up a 270 gallon drum a month....

Never heard of using engine oil, but there is tons of info on using used cooking oil from fast food places.

I've been doing research on it. Have read several places that heating the oil mixing 50/50 with diesel fuel and filtering the mess outta it works just fine, one catch. You have to keep it warm, about 180 degrees for it to work. Anyone got ideas on a fuel heater?

i have heard of a metering system that doesn't plug.
it's a rotisserie motor from a barbecue grill with a
chain sprocket and a chain with bottle tops wired on.
it dips from a bucket and dumps into a hopper and
pipe going to a cast iron skillet in a wood stove.
i have used the skillet, and it seems to work better
with some sawdust and shavings in it.
to change the flow, change the size or number of
bottle caps.

One of my former co-workers is running his old Cummins powered Dodge on used trans. fluid. No mixing, goes straight in the tank. Smokes like crazy but he swears it runs great. He had some issues with cold starts when the weather is cold but he put a heating pad on the tank that he plugged in at night and it solved that problem. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it myself. Not sure I would try it on a modern electronically controlled engine though......

You need a tank heater and a purge system for the fuel lines. It has to purge all oil out of the lines when you shut it off or it will cool and you'll be SOL.

the old cummins multifuel engines will run on used engine oil as thick as 15w40, no filtering, heating, or mixing necessary. Whats more impressive is these engines which are commonly found in M35(deuce), M39(5-ton), and M809(5-ton) series military trucks will still maintain their rated output running on used oil.

I'm sure the guy I know isn't purging the lines so that is likely part of his problem.

I know a guy that runs that stuff in a 6.9, he swears by it.

I would for sure filter it, you are litterally at the previous engines mercy as to when you catch a couple fillings.

Ive been runng used atf in our 03 Exursion 7.3 for over a year. I blend it with the bio diesel anywhere from 10-50% Im usally around 70%bio 30%atf. Winter time its about 70% disesl 30% atf. In the winter when I get up to the 50/50 it does start harder, other than that no probs. I filter to 1 micron.

Used lube oil in a diesel? frankly I wouldn't try it.

However there has been considerable success at running the 7.3 powerstroke diesel engine on used ATF.
(if you are ever following a PSD powered ford and it smells like burning plastic...)

Used lubricating oil can be mixed into home heating oil to about 20% with only a slight adjustment to the air mixture.

Slightly more lube oil can be used if the oil is exclusively from diesel engines
one of the primary reasons for changing oil in diesel engines
is the eventual build-up of fuel contamination in the lubricating oil.

To run more without greatly increasing the maintainance required on the furnace (soot removal) requires preheating the oil.
