Anyone have issues with the USB ports not being able to keep the battery charged while Android Auto is running?

Use the actual charger port. The USB ports are connected through the APIM, which is not rated to handle the load of charging the battery of your phone.

Android Auto only works through USB port. Not a critical need. Went on a long trip, needed traffic updates etc. Ranger specs also state the USB ports are smart chargers. But I think they may stop charging when data transfer is detected.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

Well that stinks.

My info on the port's capacity is a few years old, they may have beefed them up since then. I do believe that USB systems are not capable of doing data transfer and charging at the same time.

Been a while since I checked. But I thought that, of the 4 conductors in a USB cable/connector, 2 are for power transmission and 2 are for signal communication.

Yeah, but charging a battery takes more power than powering on a USB stick or something, and those wires aren't shielded from each other. It may need to dial back the charge power to not interfere with the data signals.

Neither of the usb ports in my mkx or fiesta have enough power to do squat if your actually using the phone. Ford is way behind the times with the usb ports. They should be at least QC 3.0 15 watt. Easier to charge with the power port and use bluetooth/wifi for the data connection.

Some others have wireless charging too...

The ports at the front of the console don't seem to keep my phone charged, but the ones on the back of the console do.

I’ve noticed that too and had to resort back to the old fashioned cigarette lighter adaptor.

Interesting. Plenty of USB ports (for data) are fully capable of providing high amp charging. The two on my wife's Kenwood unit with Android Auto seem to charge very quickly. I'll have to double check the rating on them.

Update... Looks like that radio (DDX9705) supports 1.5 amps to the USB ports. Not quite the official max of 2 amps for my S9, but reasonably close to it.

Just traded my Sonata for a Santa Fe, and it has a USB port for android auto AND a charging USB, but both seem to charge at the same rate. I know it's not a Ranger, but it is a 2019, so the tech should be similar (also I'm convinced that FORD is in bed with Hyundai/Kia, at least with platform sharing, maybe even more ...)

Long Story really, but, I had a '17 sonata, my BIL has a15 Fusion EB. The structure and certain points of both cars are identical, not close, but Exactly the same. I posted a thread about it, http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/index.php?threads/hyundai-got-me-thinking.179127/, and I also notice Hyundai/Kia had a 3.8L v6, a 5.0L V8, they used to run a 4.6L v8 until recently. Ford helped Hyundai back in the 60's break into the car industry, and have shared a few other cars since then. All of this plus the fact that Ford dumped Mazda, then a few years later Hyundai/Kia becomes a more reputable brand with styling a LOT like fords. I think if you strip the car down to sheet metal, you would see that they are identical.
Little things are different, like the Fusions rearview mirror was on the Door and the Sonatas was in the window.

The interiors are very similar as well. but what really convinced me was when we had the 2 cars side by side, the Hoods, trunks, and doors, all had the same hardware and were IDENTICAL at the hinges and latch points.

EDIT: to me, it's not that fart fetched, I mean in the 90's, you had the Cougar and Thunderbird, essentially the same car, but very different styles.
