We have had a multicentury war with mice here. House is built in 42 so they have all kinds of room to move out of sight between the floors.

Sticky traps and poison have worked the best for me

When i first moved into the mobile home I'm now moving out of, it had a huge rodent problem, nothing worked except a trap that electrocuted them, I caught 17 mice in 24 hours with one trap on my kitchen counter.

I hate mice. Fortunately I have only caught 3-4 of them in my house in the 10 years that I've lived there but they're always in the worst places. They pooped all over my computer desk downstairs, one peed in my cast iron frying pan (that one I caught in the act, I grabbed him with a towel, squished him and threw him out in the street.) Another one electrocuted himself on the circuit board in my furnace. One nice thing about living in town is that there isn't a huge mice problem, my buddy who lived in the country had them everywhere all the time. Vehicles always had mice in them, basement & attic where the same deal. They drew in a lot of snakes too. Rattle snakes under the porch are not ideal.

I have hay fields within 150ft in every direction. Only about 30ft on one side. Mice are ridiculous. I'm just glad that I think I got the rats out. Caught 5 babies one night on a large sticky trap. Caught a large one a few days later. It took 2 months to get the last one. I shot it with my .22 pistol. That's a helluva bang in a 15x15 room.

My credo
Doing things wrong, until I get it right.
They hate steel wool, so stuff that in any hole bigger than 1/4 inch that they may be traveling through. They also hate the aroma of mint, so put something "minty" near your food storages to keep them at bay. How you unalive them is your business, but I have found deterring them is the best way to fight them. Killing them off one by one is a slow process when you think of how fast the reproduce in such large numbers.

A .45 is better, as I've found that the really mean ones are bad about charging you if you only wing 'em.

My sister tried that but fed them too much. Now they hardly leave the porch.

I shot a mouse one time with a .45. I was pleasently surprised I hit it being that it was about 20 feet away and below me with a 3" barreled 1911 pistol. We were out at a buddy's family camp on the porch when it happend. It had run out from under the porch on to the grass. So no one freaked out about gun fire in the neighborhood and holes weren't shot into the camp. Needless to say, there wasn't anything left of the mouse.

Cats are useless if they aren't forced to find food. My cat sat on a chair and watched me squish that mouse. I really don't blame her, she gets food that is on par with people food so why eat a dirty old mouse.

It depends on the cat. Our neighbor's cat is the neighborhood free loader and still catches rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, etc and brings them over to our house to eat.

The girlfriend especially loves it when he tries to sneak his latest catch into the house. "NO DEAD THINGS! KEEP THEM OUTSIDE!"

Rodents suck, I have a cat that is a rodent catching machine, but when he fails I bring out the mouse trap board(s) and wage war... I have a number of these boards and they work great the dumb part is finding wood mouse traps anymore, the tomcat ones work best but I'm pretty sure they don't make wood mousetraps anymore...

View attachment 122506
I was able to get those exact Tomcat traps at Meijer this week. No luck on getting the rodent yet thoug. 4 pack is under 3 bucks. What do you use for bait? I set a couple out with peanut butter, but evidently the doritos appeal to them more. In the past chocolate chips work really well tool.
