I have never turbo charged anything but I was curious how much boost a 5.0 liter v8 stock could handle. I also plan on rebuilding this engine so what modifications can I do to the engine to make it handle a turbo better

In that case your rebuild should depend on the boost you want. A stock 2001 block should handle 5-10 pounds without issue but you'll need 93+ fuel. If you go with all forged internals you can go with more boost but are again limited by fuel. More boost = higher octane fuel.

Water/methanol injection will allow the timing and boost you desire. It will be cheap detonation insurance and allow 5 degrees more timing. Plus run 87 fuel. Effective Octane is 110, static compression still needs to be in check. Doing the exact same thing to the exact same 2001 motor. Just picked up the GTP38 yesterday.

Good luck.

You want boost over 500 hp.......better off starting with a aftermarket block.

Sorry. I was asking "What is a GTP38 ?" Google told me it's a turbo for a Ford Powerstroke 7.3 Diesel.

Not ideal from a normal perspective but actually excessive for 15 psi limits and will spool by 2000 Rpm to 10 psi, the operation design limit.
Several wastegste actuators are avail specific to that turbo, adjustable down to 5 psi. A BOV is the largest expense. I’m cheap and have no issue going against the grain.

Cheap at $150 plus a $60 rebuild kit. Made In USA. Plentiful too.
Hope that helps.

I would love to see this process and build. If you go forward with this PLEASE document and post here. I love it when people go against the grain and do what others said "Don't" or "You can't", or "Nobody's ever done it". You have my attention.

Definitely NOT following their lead. I discovered their project long after I had defined mine, while I was doing research.
The few and difficult to find compressor maps of the GTP38 show it actually ideal. I had procured a Turbonetics 6873 at low cost direct, a custom unit that have overproduced. It’s maps are simply perfect but so overkill….. and in 3 weeks of waiting for an inventory item to ship—— they did not. So I cancelled order. Back to square 1 with 500 more bones in my pocket for project.
It’s all wrong——- but it’s actually nearly perfect for “limited budget and limited power” requirements. Very JYD friendly device for v clamps, flanges, pedestals to mutilate for oiling, etc.
Rebellion is a good thing sometimes. I’ll be happy to get 350 hp…. Cheaper than heads, more fuel efficient than heads and cam, better drive ability than both as well. Dollars vs fun——-

There used to be a "popcorn eating emoji". This is where I would use it. I'll be keeping my eye out for progress.
