My credo
The perfect is the enemy of the good.
Here is part number listed in the manual for the cruise buttons for the '97:
9D743/9D744 (left and right)
I'm having a hard time finding this.
I suspect Aerostar is the same, manual just says "Aerostar similar" and doesn't give a diff part#
There might be a match to Mercury, maybe Taurus, just guessing.
And I don't want to pay $200-$300 for them that's ridiculous (carid)

Is that a proper and complete part number or am I missing a prefix?
Where am I going to find this part at a reasonable price short of junkyard?
Where can I find part x-ref that tells me what other vehicles it was on?

A legend to the old man, a hero to the child...
Aerostars ran a different steering wheel then the later rangers. They ran the big brick style like the 94-96 F150. So i dont think aerostar buttons will work

Yeah sorry Ron I got to change my pic/info my bad
It's for the '97
2011 Supercab are you thinking that 9C888 will work? It's not the part they show but if you have an xref?

There are 7 pins on the buttons.

Pins 1/2 on lh button and 6/7 on the rh button are backlighting (power and ground)
Pin 3 lh and 5 rh are switch ass'y input
Pin 4 on each is ground for the switch
Pins 5 lh and 3 rh are Hot: speed control and horn switches
Pins 6 lh and 2 rh are NOT USED
Pin 7 lh and 1 rh are, again, Hot: speed control and horn switches

No idea why there are two pins on each hot for horn/speed control Hot doesn't really matter just the way it's set up.

Anyway I do think Aerostar for '97 might work as in the Aerostar section for it they list the same part 9D743.

Not sure if the pinning info helps at all. It's probably better to go by part numbers, unless one had a pin-out for the 9C888 and it was the same, and the mounts are the same etc but a good xref should tell that.

Hope this helps a little.

The other thing is, it's been suggested, that even if the pin-outs are different but the body/cover and mounting holes etc are the same maybe I could strip the guts from the existing busted up ones and put them into new ass'y that could work I suppose. Don't yet know if backlighting and all buttons work reliably have not had a chance to test this all out until I get rad in.

This only thing sucky about '97 is some parts hard to find.
I want to get new if it's halfway reasonable otherwise will start with the junkyards but usually these buttons are all beat up.
Funny because rest of the '97 is like immaculate inside except for these ugly buttons busted up taped up buttons.

This is what CarID says works it's the F67Z9C888BC more details on - https://www.carid.com/motorcraft/cruise-control-switch-mpn-sw5919.html?singleid=291426287&url=3309641
Look at the price. That just aint right. Besides, why are they listing a diff part number than my manual?

Adding.... here's where I get confused, and it's probably in the manuals somewhere....
How do I know the PREFIX for my part#? For instance I can find the 9D743 (my part# in manual) with a different prefix, and it's a totally different switch not even the same shape.
There must be a prefix that applies to my year/vehicle how do I find it?

Yes, "part number" can/will be used across many years and models

It will be a pre-1999 designation, so 2 digit date code and 1 digit Model, and usually Z department for electronic

So you can start with F7(1997), 7(Ranger) and Z, since its unlikely there would be a 1998 designated part in a 1997 vehicle

F77Z-9D743 search
Then go backwards
F67Z-9D743 search
F57Z-9D743
F47Z-9D743

A part can be updated, but you will find the original part number in a search and it will also have the updated designation
i.e. F57Z-9D743 may have been re-designed in 1998 but is backwards compatible to 1995, so F57Z-9D743 is now F87Z-9D743, but BOTH should show up in a search

Ford did change the prefix structure in 1999
Date is 1 digit, Model is 2 digits
X = 1999
Y = 2000
1 = 2001

Ranger = L5

So you could find 1L5Z-9D743, a 2001 part number but backwards compatible to F57Z-9D743, IF so indicated

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Have you asked this guy if his are in usable condition?

Thanks Ron that helps TONS.
In the search like you say IF so indicated as backwards compatible.
If indeed the 888 part is compatible I should see this written somewhere.

Thanks Eric I asked him, guess I should be watching that forum.

I find a zillion 9C888XX parts and I don't know what does the XX letters mean but I would think they are critical
So far I find matches to the part number (below) but SW is different and I dunno what is SW number I think it goes on the box to make it easy to find?
My gut feel is if the SW matches, it works, regardless of part#, but I don't find matches to SW anyways.

here is for my '97 truck as far as I know; it's different part number than my manual I am just getting this from the big zip file where there are ton of parts for a lot of years and models
F77Z 9C888CA SW 6686 SWITCH AND WIRE ASY - CONTROL
I'm not positive that's it but I'm kinda sure.

Manual says it's 9D743 but that can't be right, I find zero of anything about that, anywhere (except the manual). Could be an error? They don't give a SW# in the manual if that is relevant.

Maybe I could find out something by taking a couple things apart and looking at the existing ones to see is there a part# on them. There should be.

I did this on the '99 and it was like 20 bucks.

Have not ruled out getting a set that -might- fit the guts but I think backlight is shot anyway I really want new ones or good used ones.

Will check junkyard tomorrow maybe they can do an xref on it, they have to know those things.
