New here, and i've seen some info on this, but i just wanted to get some specifics.

I have a 2002 Ford Ranger Edge 4x4 Manual Extended Cab. I just bought it about a month ago.
It's very difficult to put into second gear, and sometimes a bit difficult for other gears. Fluid level checked well. Clutch engages fine and it doesn't matter if clutch is half or fully engaged. I've read that it's just the pilot bearing. I've never dropped a tranny before, but i am mechanically inclined.

Thanks!! Lynsman

hopefully it is the pilot bearing but usually when this goes out it makes a grinding noise. and hopefully the syncronizers arent going out in ur tranny..

does it do it at all speeds? low rpm shifting or high? both?

pressure plate may be wore.. broke springs or jus plain old wear..

It's purdy good at going into 1,3,4,5 and reverse. sometimes a bit sticky. I've notice an easier time going into second if i try at higher rpms. also, once i engage clutch and get into ANY gear, i can shift between all gears, including second, easily while clutch is still engaged.

Double clutching is when you would shift from first to neutral, release clutch, blip throttle, disengauge clutch, shift to second. This is primarily used on big rigs when downshifting, also on real old non-syncro trans. Might try changing trans fluid ,easier than trans drop. Maybe slave cyl isn't releasing clutch completely ?

thx for the info, i checked the fluid. seemed a bit NON-viscous, but still had some color to it. should it be thicker?

Well, I had a mechanic look at it. We drove around a bit after he inspected everything on the truck. "Man that's just a tight transmission" he said. it has 130k on truck and he said it just felt like a tight, new tranny lol! I had the fluid changed and it's still difficult to shift (in my opinion), but i'm glad nothing's wrong. Hopefully this'll help someone else.

yeah it's really odd. I've had a 98 ranger 4banger and 02 ranger 4banger (both manual) and they were reeeaaally easy to shift. this one chirps in 3rd too, and i've done no mods other than intake/exhaust.

btw, i pulled my old man's 18ft center console boat (2000lbs fully equiped) up a huge ramp, no problem! go, go, power rangers lol :icon_thumby:
