Plenty! I bought a case of 12 quarts when doing my '02 Ranger. I'm thinking maybe load 4 quarts, start engine, and recheck as you fill. The problem here is that the torque converter has no drain so empty transmission oil capacity will not be correct.

Someone else here on the site may have a better number.

Call your local auto parts store and ask what the drain and fill capacity is for your transmission

My credo
If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
You get an attaboy for changing the fluid. I always use Motorcraft fluid rather than some of the "universal" stuff the aftermarket sells. If it's a 4x4 do the transfer case, too. It takes Mercon/Dexron II that Ford only sells as overpriced transfer case fluid so I'd get that from the aftermarket.

When you change transmission fluid, if you haven't already done so, replace the pan for one with a drain plug. Makes life so much easier the next time.

And you can measure how much oil is drained as a start for the refill.

I believe you can. Do you have the owner’s manual to verify? I also believe it is backward compatible with older fluid.

Mercon V is supposed to be backwards compatible but for the older stuff I usually just use Dex/Merc 3, it’s acceptable and cheaper than V and with a shift kit and some valve body work and extra cooling should be just fine in the older A4LD stuff.
