So after procrastination, I think I am going to try and replace the gasket between the transmission and the transmission extension housing. This is where I think my transmission is leaking. I just changed the transmission pan gasket and I still have a leak in that general area. I think I can handle removing the transfer case (directions see in the Haynes manual) - just take my time with it.

The extension housing looks pretty benign:

Are there instructions or video of removing the extension housing without removing the transmission?
Do I or should I change the seals in the extension housing?
Should I take the time to change the seals in the transfer case?
What do I need to look out for?
Do I also need to use RTV gasket maker with the gasket or is this overkill?
What or where else should I look for if I think my leak is coming from this area?
Is there an easier way?
For a shade tree mechanic, how long of a job is this?

TIA

Well, Just an update. Hope this helps if someone tries to fix a leak.

I went ahead and took the transfer case and extension housing off and this is what I found. The first picture is from the transmission and if you notice, there is a missing piece where the pawl's stud should go. The parking pawl went out a while ago and I guess we know now why.

The second picture is of the extension housing. You can see where the gasket just disappeared. I doubt it was where the pawl's piece broke off and wore it out. The bottom right is where the housing broke off when removing it. I was hitting it with a 2lb hammer to help dislodge it on the bottom left and the bottom right broke off. I thought it was stuck but I was wrong. The upper left stud that had two nuts on it - one to hold the housing and the other was holding a bracket. I took the first nut off and thought that was it but I was wrong. Anyways, the gasket was ripped apart and that is where I saw the leak. Have to go to a salvage yard now to see if I can find a new extension housing.

Glad you figured it out! Hate you busted it to find out what it was leaking!
