Here is the selection for a 1988 ranger transmissions. You must have an oddball, they don't list a M5R1 for that year.

AT, 4-140 (2.3L)
AT, 6-179 (2.9L), 4x2
AT, 6-179 (2.9L), 4x4
MT, 4x2, 4 cylinder
MT, 4x2, 6 cylinder, Mitsubishi manufactured
MT, 4x2, 6 cylinder, Toyo Kogyo (Mazda) manufactured
MT, 4x4, 4 cylinder
MT, 4x4, 6 cylinder, Mitsubishi manufactured (12 oil pan bolts)
MT, 4x4, 6 cylinder, Toyo Kogyo (Mazda) manufactured

But I picked a MT 4x2 Toyo Koygo and some listings did come up that had a 4.0 engine in them. They had to have the M5R1 correct? Here are some in California.

My credo
A legend to the old man, a hero to the child...
The TK was never used factory behind a 4.0.

The M5OD did start in 88 i believe.

The TK has a 3.96:1 1st gear and makes for some fun launching with the 2.9

Thanks @franklin2. People have told me that its weird that I have an M5 in my 1988 before and I'm not positive it's the original trans but the owners from 1991-2019 say it is the original one so I'm guessing it is.

It's not weird, I have a Mazda trans in my 4 cylinder '88. Why some trucks got those and others did not, is beyond me... especially second gen trucks. Makes no sense to put a strong trans behind a 4 cylinder or in a 2wd and a weak one behind a V6 4x4.

I just bought the transmission yesterday and I'm waiting for the clutch related parts to come in the mail. The trans came out of a wrecked Ranger and had 2000 miles on a rebuild that was done by the previous owner's trade school teacher. I pulled the tail shaft housing off to count the teeth on the speedo gear and take a look at what kind of shape it was in. From the little I could see it was in perfect condition.

What is the best way to seal the tail shaft housing?

If you don't have a gasket, I would use RTV.

Should be 7 tooth Drive Gear

There is a gasket for tail shaft but there is no internal pressure so thin coat of RTV on both pieces should be enough to seal any defects in the metal surfaces, which is what a gasket is for

It’s a white gear. I must have counted wrong.
