The 4 cylinders got the M5OD first and that started in '88 so yeah, that checks out. That trans is definitely worth the price, I'd take it off your hands but I'm on the wrong side of the country...

It was probably an early '88 or a really late '87 maybe. My '88 4 cylinder 4x4 truck has an M5OD. Those first couple years of M5OD's had some unique parts in the 5th/reverse cluster and mine had them when I disassembled it so I'm sure it was original to the truck. Whatever the story is, it doesn't really matter at this point because they are so hard to find.

the grey-t escape
my ‘88 (2wd) 2.3 had the M5OD.

FWIW, I really kinda want to put a range box in my '97 4x2 for working trailers and stuff, plus then if I did get silly and put a mild turbo on it and went with 4.30's or 4.56's and 31" tires it would be more versatile... but I kinda also want to get silly and make it a long bed too and be all the random...

Tempting, it'd probably be another $300 to get it on a pallet and across the country... I have bigger irons in the fire though, it would bolt right onto my '90 and probably be quieter and give me spare parts to assemble into the '97 when I get there...

Yeah, the 5/R gears and stuff had a different tooth count for the synchros and stuff before '92 I think when they changed to the other slave cylinder... I remember that from the first time I rebuilt the '90's trans as I needed that part.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Got it cleaned up and verified that everything shifts and rotates.

Just saw it was missing the rear yoke/flange on the t-case, didn't know if you noticed that. Not really a hard item to find.

I did notice that. I'm not going to put any more time or money into it unless I use it myself or someone wants to pay extra for me to fix or refurbish stuff. I've got a whole day in cleaning it, testing it and going to get it. Anything I didn't mention specifically should be answered by looking at the pictures.
