In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I saw an ad on FB marketplace today for a transmission and transfer case from an 87 Ranger. Asking price is $300. I messaged the man and recommended that he post it on our forum here and provide more details. He has replied "I'll go lower. Come get it."

I don't particularly need it at this time. But, I see this as potentially useful for people here. I sent him a reply asking for what model the transmission is, what enginebit was mounted to and anything else he knows of the condition.

Anyone interested? I can go get it and even pay for it temporarily. I'll follow up here with any other details he provides.

It was mated to a 2.9l that "blew up".

The 1350 transfer case with the slip yoke front output isn't that desirable.

I miss mine dearly.

The dang fixed front output on my 205 has been a major pain in my rear. 1350 slip yoke was much simpler and the whole thing never gave me a hint of an issue even running double OE hp.

My only complaint with my 1350 was Ford's stupid dogleg shift pattern. But they did that on all the later t-cases not just the 1350. Twin stick 205 blows it away in that regard, far, far easier to shift.

Well, it's here at the house, still in the back of the Snooperduty. I'll clean it all up tomorrow (friday) and see exactly what everything is. I was able to spin shafts and move shifters and nothing looked terribly damaged on the outside. So, it is safely in the hands of a TRS member and available to whomever wants or needs it. Came from an 87 Ranger with 2.9l.

The guy showed up in a rwd 93, 2.3l single cab that's been lowered. He's only had it a few weeks. Previous owner put some kind of locker in the diff (said it cost $600) and it's eating tires crazy fast. I'm thinking it has a lunchbox locker that's improperly installed. Even just doing a gentle S maneuver so we could line up our tailgates, that thing was bucking and scrubbing tires. It's locked hard. I encouraged him to join us here for help and info.

Trying to get it somewhat cleaned up. I hate storing and transporting greasy grimy heavy things. Looks like an M5OD-R1 to me.

Looks like a 4 cylinder M5OD. Pretty hard to find!

He said it came from a 2.9l. So, V6. But that should mate to either a 2.9l or a 4.0l. Right?

Not what I need at the moment. But a good combo for someone.

He was not telling you the truth. 2.3 starter is on the passenger side... 2.9/4.0 starter is on the driver's side.

Regardless - a 4 cylinder, 4x4 M5OD in good working order is very hard to find.

Cool. Starter definitely goes on passenger side on this one. Thanks for the education. Any other definitive info is welcome.

I was surprised it was an M5OD. From an 87, which I am also now suspicious of, I thought it would more likely be an FM145 or similar.

He drove up in a ragged out 93 that he said had a 2 3l, 8 plug engine.

Kinda don't know if it would be a M5OD in a 88, I thought they kinda came out with the 4.0 and BW1354.

At this point, the most important thing in my mind is to figure out exactly what I have here. I'll finish cleaning it. Then do a more thorough operational check. I need to replace a couple missing pins that prevent the shifter from rotating. Then it will be easier to shift and check out.

But first, I had to stop and shower so I can send out a dip stick that someone has bought.
