Let me start off by saying that I have no experience with either case. What’s the difference between the two? As long as the bolt patter and spline count is the same, they’ll mount up to the same transmission.

I thought the 4405 was used with the bigger 4R70 or M5R2 transmissions and had a different bolt pattern

Other thing is the front axle connection, 2006 Ranger would use the "cup" style, not sure on the 1997 Explorer, those weren't used until 1998 in Rangers, maybe explorers had them earlier

Do you want the good news? Or the bad news??

The good news - it has the same 25 spline input shaft and 5 bolt pattern, so will physically bolt to your transmission.

The bad new - the 4405 uses an electromagnetic clutch to provide 4WD. The Explorer you pulled it out of had 4 Auto, 4WD and 4Lo, so unless you pulled and wired in the GEM from the Sport Trac, it won't ever provide 4wd for you (although it would give you low range in 2wd). Your Ranger isn't programmed to activate the clutch.
