Hi folks,

I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. Awesome to see an entire forum dedicated to rangers!

I’ve got a 2008 Sport 4x4 with a 4.0L manual with just under 200k km. Had it about 4 years. Love it. Everything is stock. Currently pulling the tranny to replace the clutch for its first time. When I pulled the transfer case I noticed a couple of things on the rear shaft output that I was hoping to get some feedback on:

1. Turning it feels/sounds rough, and
2. There’s a bit of a knock on first turn. Pretty sure I've heard this noise sometimes on first drive.

Curious if these sounds are normal or if I should be fixing something while I have it out?

I’ve since drained the fluid - it was very dirty and not overly viscus.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Here's a video of the noises:

Welcome to TRS.

The knock noise is normal. I can't recall if it's part of the internal oil pump or part of the low range gear assy, but every t-case I've ever had out of a truck makes that noise.
However the roughness is not normal. Based on that I'd probably take a peek inside and see if anything is worn (bearings, oil pump, etc.).

I'll move this over to the Transfer Cases & Locking Hubs section.

Cheers @4x4junkie, appreciate the response. I’ll have a look inside then and see what’s up.
