If you have the FM you need a shorter shaft. If you have a TK I think you ok (not 100% on that last part).

can I put a A4LD in it is a 1983 2wd 2.8l C-3 standard cab short bed I am getting tired of the front seal leak and need to pull it anyway. Just want to know my options for a good dependable replacement and like the idea of a 4speed overdrive. What do I need for the shifter and driveline and put a switch in the cab for the lockout.

Well, you could put an A4LD in, or you could go get a good, dependable replacement. Unfortunately it's impossible to do both at the same time.

A4LDs are notoriously weak and break a lot. They have the same front seal issue as well. Your best bet if you want to keep an auto is to go get a C-5 and fill it with C-3 guts.

If you want a really good one, find a V6 C-5 case and fill it with V-8 C-3 guts. That sucker will just about never break.

Otherwise, your best bet for reliability is a manual. Preferably M5OD.

Thanks There is nothing really wrong with this tranny except the oil leak about 1/2 quart every other month. It don`t wrap as high on the freeway since I put the 15" B-II wheels on and durasparked it. Is there anyting I should do while I have the tranny out or just put new seals and put it back together. thanks
