My credo
the grey-t escape
well today I took my extra set of escape wheels and had snow tires mounted, didnt ask for tpms to be replaced, I just wanted standard valve stems, well they seemed to have replaced them anyways. I figured light would still come on but didnt care, these tires will be back off by late april and I know how to check tire pressure. I get home drop the tires off & go to her work to get the escape, change tires and put it back, the tire light stayed off, yes it was on like all the other 100 idiot lights that come on when you start a vehicle, but it seems that either the new sensors in the snow tires “self-learned” somehow or that system has been disabled. I know the doors dont lock when you take it out of park and most new stuff does, so maybe someone has disabled both “rolling locks” as well as tpms. (“newer” to me is anything past 1997) this is a 2011 escape. Not that it matters but rims I used are a 2003-2005 alloy wheel. Glad theres no dash light but I thought for sure there would be.

Are you sure your TPMS system uses sensors inside the wheels? On some AWD vehicles the TPMS system runs off the wheel speed sensors so it doesn't matter if you swap rims/tires. The system looks for a wheel moving at a different speed to determine if the tire is flat. Dunno if that's the case here, just throwing it out there...

im pretty sure it goes off sensors inside the rims, but what you said does make sence.

My experience, is that it takes a highway trip of some distance before the system triggers a light. Even with tires that have been on my trucks for years. Every time I do a swap from winter tires to summer and vice versa, I have to wait until I drive to work for the light to come on. Then I can train/relearn the system for the new configuration. I've tried doing it before the light comes on and it has never worked. I have to wait for the light to come on and then do the procedure.

The reset parameter is something like sustained speed over 25mph for 5 miles, at least in an instance where the light was triggered and you fix/re-inflate the tire.

the grey-t escape
well tonight it happened. after work we headed north to a neighboring town that has a huge light display at a park, got about 7 miles north of the house and the light comes on, some message about tire pressure where the odometer reading is. Was able to clear the message by hitting a reset button but light is still on (i can live with that) beautiful night for lights btw, had about a inch of snow, its 32 and lightly snowing. Im not sure how many miles have been driven since the snow tire swap, Bren drives 10 a day for work so thats 40 miles /week. weekends we at least go to town for groceries & gas, a good 20 miles round trip so 60 miles week on average. But then there is the occasional trip like tonight. Id say at least 300 miles have been put on since December 1 when I got the tires. Glad there’s no damn dinger going off constantly.

You need this tool and to run through the learn/train procedure to fix it. The tool is $20 and takes maybe 5 minutes to do.

I'm typing this up from memory, so I might miss something that another may need to correct.

1. press and release the brake pedal with the ignition off.
2. cycle the ignition off to run three times stopping at run
3. press and release the brake pedal
4. cycle the ignition off and on three times stopping at run. The horn should beep.
5. use the tool holding by the valve at the front, left tire. It can take 6 seconds for the system to register. The horn will beep. Repeat with the front, right, rear, right, and rear, left.
6. Turn the ignition off. If the horn doesn't beep, the procedure was successful. If it does beep, the procedure failed.

This works on my 2011 and the 2019. The TPMS light must come on before you run the procedure or it won't take. Even then, sometimes it takes more than once for it to take but rarely more than twice.

On the F250’s I believe you have to have the door closed before you do the Hokey Pokey... I don’t know about the other Fords.

When I go back to my original wheels will this have to be done or will it have that set of 4 sensors “in memory “ somehow?

That would require the engineers who designed the system to have had the forethought and wisdom to consider that people often switch between two sets of wheels/tires during the winter and summer. Being able to program two complete sets of sensors would be a logical and simple way to make things easier for vehicle owner.

So obviously no you can't do that. You will have to reprogram them each time you swap rims.

well my ranger is a ‘94 and my work car (her old hhr) is a ‘06. so this ‘11 is very new to me in many ways even though its 9 years old now.
