What is the torque converter rated at on a 98 4.0 4x4? Is it 1800 rpm's or what? I have a weird noise coming from under the hood (One which I diagnosed to be the IAC) and it only happens when I get above 3000 rpm's. I put the E-brake on, foot brake in drive, and got it up to 4k rpm's and I could hear the noise. I then took the belt off and ran it again up to 3-4k rpm's and the noise wasn't there. I replaced the belt tensioner and idler pulley today and they didn't fix it. I'm assuming it has to be a different pulley because it didn't do it with the belt off.
That leads to this....
I put it up on the lift and redid the test with the e-brake on up to 3k in Drive and I had someone under the truck and they said it sounds like it's coming from the torque converter. I believe my torque converter is f^$%$#%# because I had it up that high and i'm getting horrible gas mileage.

Sorry if this makes little sense and if it rambles on, i'm just trying to be thorough. Hopefully someone can help! :icon_cheers:

If you're experiencing a 3,000+rpm stall speed in drive, and your rear wheels are not turning, you either have a bad torque converter or your tranny's starting to slip. Either way, this is definatly something to look into.

Check your auto tranny fluid. Look at the color and smell it.

I did a filter change last week. What am I "smelling" for? It's literally brand new Mercon V. Maybe 200 miles tops.

If it is slipping it will smell burnt very very quickly, even with fresh fluid.

It sounds like children screaming under my hood at 3k rpm's. The thing is though, when I had someone under the truck while I had it on the lift, they said it sounded like it was coming from the tranny (torque converter area). It only happens at 3k rpm's up.

I performed the stall speed test today and in D (Overdrive), D, 1, 2, and Reverse they were all above the specified stall speeds of 2405-2800 rpm. I either need to rebuild my trans now or replace it. Anyone got a spare 5R55E laying around?:icon_rofl:
