Torque converter stud size?

Hi, can someone tell me the thread size on the torque converter studs? I stripped a couple nuts doing my trans swap and I can't find the nuts at the box auto parts stores. When I google the torque converter the descriptions say the torque converters fit both 4r55e and 5r55e which I know are the same trans basically. But when I search for the nuts they list 3/8"x24 nut for the 4r55e and then list 10mx 1.0mm for the 5r55e. Looking at them the measurements are almost identical but a there is a difference with a a caliber. Are these the same size nuts if not what size fits a damn ranger!? Hope someone knows, looking for simple locking nuts on the internet is making my head hurt

well I think a 13 mm wrench fits the nut, doesnt help much as the stud on converter could have fine or coarse threads. Im sure its metric though.

3/8" and 10mm are definitely different.

Did you look at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.? Could probably get a handful of each for a couple bucks. Are the threads on the studs damaged? Or just the nuts. If the studs are damaged, I probably wouldn't trust just putting new nuts on.

Thank you for replies. I rounded the nuts with a junk socket and threads are fine. Factory nuts are 13mm but more wondering the stud threads than nut size

Metric hex = metric threads. If you're positive that it was 13mm and 1/2" wouldn't fit.

well “most” of the time a certian wrench size equals a certian stud size (9/16 = 3/8, 3/4 = 1/2 ect) Im sure it would be metric, not many sae fasteners on rangers.

I have two torque converters handy, one from a '97 explorer and one from a '02 ranger, xlt 4x4, both 4L SOHC, both are 3/8 x 24 (NF). Kinda surprised me, I would have thought they'd be metric, M10-1 die fit on the studs but was loose, 3/8 x 24tpi seems to fit fine on both. The nuts are "pinched" lock nuts, so I couldn't really check them with a tap.

1: They are metric, not SAE, and they are fine thread.

2: Just go to the dealer and buy a pack of converter nuts. They aren't expensive, they will have them in stock, this is one of those things that is important enough to spend a few extra dollars and do right.

Also, since they are fine thread, they are kind of an odd-ball that a hardware store is not likely to have on the shelf anyway. Most of my experience in Lowes and Home Despot is that they usually only have the coarse, or middle threads, and almost ever the fine thread.

the best local source Ive found for metric hardware is rural king, however they wont be the “pinched locking nut” like the original. This is one item Id go to a dealer for.

For anyone that stumble across this thread, here is the answer. Applies to 4.0 SOHC with 5R44E and 5R55E Auto Trans manufactured from 08/04/2003 to 12/16/2011. Ford part number is 378941S441, you need 4. Yes, everything else is metric, and yes... these are not. 3/8"-24, you can search "torque converter nut 6717" for an acceptable alternative.
