This is bearing number 3 we have replaced in my Brothers Escape. Is there anything I haven't thought of, that could produce this sound? As you can tell, it gets worse when the wheel goes to the left, and disappears when it goes right. Also replaced the CV axle, and it didn't change. Rotating the tires did nothing.

The thing I found weird was.... We took it to the Ford dealer (not the same one that pressed the last one in) and they said "we don't do those anymore because the hub breaks so easy". And then he said "we have Carquest do them all now".

Wait.... you're a FORD dealer that can't do it? Last time I need to go there (coincidentally, it's also the first).

Any chance a ball joint would cause this noise..... on a brand new bearing?

When you go left the greater load is on the passenger side bearing. I did not hear anything on the video due to not having speakers on this computer, I'll find some speakers and try again later.

I am 99.9% sure it is the drivers side bearing making the noise. Been wrong before though. From both the passenger and driver seat it feels much more intense on the drivers side of the vehicle.

Don't know how good my sound is on this thing but it sounds a lot like tyre noise. Did you check the camber when you put the strut back on? Did you try increasing the tyre pressures five or six pounds to see if the sound changes?

I thought it was tire noise as well. I had him get them rotated and the sound stayed. So just for my own peace of mind, I rotated them as well. I will have him mess with the pressure though. Because of us working different shifts, I only see my Brother on the weekends.

So, unbeknownst to me, my Brother took it to the dealer today after he could sense my frustration with this thing. Without a doubt, the dealer said it is the drivers side wheel bearing causing the noise.

I guess I'm going to have to use a hot and cold method to get this bearing in there - or find someone who knows how to properly press a bearing in.

So this will be bearing number 4? I would be looking for a reason for this, it's not normal. The torque on the driveaxle nut is very important as it sets the preload on the bearing. Can't remember if there's a washer behind the nut on those but if there is supposed to be one that's missing, the thread might be bottoming out before the bearing preload is achieved, even though the nut is tight on the shaft. Don't tighten the nut with an air gun, it will result in it being well over torqued. I don't remember what the torque figure is but it's over a hundred. Post what you find, good luck.

Yes, bearing number 4 this will be.

I talked to my buddy last night. We are going to put the knuckle in his hot tank and try putting the bearing in. He claims it will slide right in. My Brother didn't order the bearing yet, so I doubt we will do it this weekend.

I've always put them in cold using a cheap hydraulic press and never had a problem, that's why I suggested looking for a problem in another area. keep us posted.

Exactly, super easy to install using a shop press, You just need to make sure you support the bearing properly when pressing the hub flange back into the bearing. No special trickery involved....

That's exactly what I think is not happening. I think the two shops are not supporting it properly. When I took mine to the dealer, they wanted as much info as I could give them about the vehicle and charged me through their system. When we took my Brother's to the same dealer, somebody else did it - and he came out and said "give me 20 dollars, and we'll call it even". I think he knew he jacked it up. I'm sure you Ford techs know what I mean when I say that when it breaks.... you know it. It's loud.
