I've ran into this problem with my 87 Ford Ranger 4x2 pickup as well. Stock size is 195/70-14, 205/70-14, 215/70-14.
Tire Rack shows a 225/70-15 tire will fit but I'm not sure how accurate that would be. However, that size does offer a few all terrain tires rather than just all season tires. Nothing is offered for winter tires in any of those sizes however that I've found in searching for winter options for here in Idaho...don't really care about studded tires but wanted something for snow, but well there isn't anything LOL.
225/55-16 as well as 225/55-17 both offer winter tire options, and several all season and all terrain options....problem is going to anything other than 14 inch wheel sized tires you'll have to find wheels that will bolt up and that's where I'm running into the most trouble right now. What other wheels from other vehicles will bolt up to a Ranger which I think is a 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern.
Apparently tire makers don't realize how many vehicles are still out there that still run 14 and 15 inch wheels, heck I think even 16 inch wheels are becoming obsolete LOL.
