Hi, I have a 83 2.3 2wd . Finding tires for the 14 inch rims is becoming difficult. Suggestions for tire or bigger rims without modification to the suspension. Winter is coming!

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

I would recommend getting 16 inch wheels. 15's would be ok. But tires for 15's are becoming less common also. I would recommend an 8" width for the wheels. Then decide on your tire size. The outer diameyer and width of the tire is what determines if it will fit without rubbing on the fenders. The offset or backspacing of the wheel also plays into that. There are tire size calculators online that will help you with this. You can get tires for different sized wheels that have the same or almost the same dimensions as your original tires. I know that 235/75-R15 is a common size that works well on most Rangers.

We have some helpful articles in our tech library for this, even pictures of various Rangers with different sized wheel and tire combinations, and a link to a tire size calculator.

I've ran into this problem with my 87 Ford Ranger 4x2 pickup as well. Stock size is 195/70-14, 205/70-14, 215/70-14.
Tire Rack shows a 225/70-15 tire will fit but I'm not sure how accurate that would be. However, that size does offer a few all terrain tires rather than just all season tires. Nothing is offered for winter tires in any of those sizes however that I've found in searching for winter options for here in Idaho...don't really care about studded tires but wanted something for snow, but well there isn't anything LOL.

225/55-16 as well as 225/55-17 both offer winter tire options, and several all season and all terrain options....problem is going to anything other than 14 inch wheel sized tires you'll have to find wheels that will bolt up and that's where I'm running into the most trouble right now. What other wheels from other vehicles will bolt up to a Ranger which I think is a 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern.

Apparently tire makers don't realize how many vehicles are still out there that still run 14 and 15 inch wheels, heck I think even 16 inch wheels are becoming obsolete LOL.

Many older Jeeps have the same lug pattern.

IDK about 17s but 16's were fairly common on later model Rangers/Explorers. That's what I'm using. Beware the chrome clad steel things tho. The set I got had significant rust under the chrome.
