ripping apart a 2.8 for going into rebuilding mode for another truck we are building/restoring ... wondering a question on the toughness of the timing gear(s) tephlon?? coating. It is in perfect looking condition.

Question, has anyone ever seen one of them eat itself? or self destruct? what/where is the weak point of the gear set? and how do i know if i can reuse the same units?

thanks

If you want a guarentee of no failure, put a aftermarket aluminum gear on it. I did some research on the stock gears, and read about a few failures but not many. Going into my 2.8 to investigate a running issue I found my timing gear had already been changed to the aftermarket one.

Since you are in the engine already its a good idea to replace them. I've heard of a few failures but not many, but while you are in there it only makes since to replace them. Looks like the gear set is less than $80 on Rockauto.com....well worth it if you are going to reuse the 2.8L V6 by the sounds of it. Not a bad engine, not gonna win races, but wouldn't say its the worst engine LOL. Had that engine in my 84 Ford Ranger as well as an 84 Ford Bronco 2 I had several years ago. Can't complain about them too much, they never left me stranded anywhere.
