I am thinking of getting a late 2000s Ranger with the 4L overhead cam but my worry is the timing chain issue. I know Ford eventually upgraded the timing chain tensioner but did this completely solve the issue or can it still happen?

I believe there was more then just an update to the tensioners. They also updated the composite material on the guides.

That said... some of the early engines were capable of going high mileage with the older components.

I really think it all boiled down to regular maintenance with good oil and filters.

I think sonetime in 03 forward... all the new engine had all the updated components.

Around 2001~2002, factory design of 2 OilPressurized & 1 LeafSpring TimingTensioners were improved\revised,
though for any year model with the V6~4.0L~SOHC, if engine has not had regular Oil+Filter changes,
more likely the OilPressuized TimingTensioners fail, causing broken TimingGuides, Chains slapping\breaking ValveCovers, Engine damage.
They tend to stiffen\sludge up if neglected.
Watch out for
* "Death Rattle", sounds like a diesel idling
* left ValveCover cracked\leaking at the front
* right ValveCover cracked\leakng at the rear
* schrapnel from broken TimingGuides in the OilPan.
Along with 5kMile\6mth Oil+Filter changes,
renewing the 2 OilPressurized TimingTensioners (relatively cheap+easy) every 100kMiles\12years is advised.

And that tension3r deal is the same issue on lots of vehicles that use oil pressure to keep tension. I bought a bmw or two that i had to change the tensioner and guides for the same thing ao its not a terrible issue
