My 05 Ranger 4x4 with a manual transmission. Started making a ticking today in first 3 gears and goes away in 4th gear and then a faint tick in 5th but only does while driving. Has anyone experienced this before and can give me insight on the problem and how I can diagnose and/or remedy this issue?

Pocket or counter shaft bearings in the trans. Bad news is that it needs to come out and about 90% of the way apart to replace those.

Good news is that the parts aren't terribly expensive and it is one of the easiest transmissions to work on. A competent DIY'er could probably do it in a week or less.

Rock in your tire?
I had a horrible speed related ticking noise after I finished up putting the first engine in my BII. Found an engine bearing caught in the treads.

I wasn't trying to be silly. Working at a brake shop for 3 years taught me to never overlook the simple things. At slower speeds, a rock in the tire can be annoying and loud, at higher speeds, the noise gets drowned out and seems to go away, then comes back at slow speed. But the clutch thing says it may be more than a rock.

I didn't think you were. The fact the that it goes away in 4th and comes back in 5th says it is something that isn't loaded or isn't spinning in 4th gear, but is in the rest. That pretty much leaves pocket and counter shaft bearings.

I wasn't being silly either. I threw a known good engine from my Ranger into my B2 right. Both vehicles had been quiet before the work. Pulled the B2 out, ran it down the road, nasty tack tack tack tack, got worse with speed. Went home and looked around for loose things, found a crank bearing from the engine I'd just rebuilt for the Ranger stuck in the treads. Loudest, scariest thing ever. Except for that time my front wheel came off.
