The paint is peeling off like a bad sunburn, so the question is what color (eventually)
  • Original Silver
  • Light Blue
  • Hunter Green
What color would you choose?

Keep your mind like an umbrella, it only works if its open... Continually learning.
How much work are you preparing yourself for? Being that you're in FL, I'd go with the Silver.

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
I've been cleaning a black Mustang since 1990, while dark colors look great clean, they don't stay looking good. White is almost as much work as black and doesn't look as good. I bought a new silver Taurus in 99 and it looked great with a fresh wax job- and didn't look much different after driving it 2 weeks, even if it rained. A really light blue would be almost as forgiving.

Silver shows dirt the least, imo. And probably more reflective for your hot climate. Saab's 1986 Rose Quartz is a really nice silver, you don't really see any rose in it until sunset then it looks super sharp.

What's the worst that could happen?
What's the original color?
That's what I would go with unless you're totally sick of it.
Going original might save you from some detail work.

Its probably better to be self deprecating than self defecating.
I'm partial to the carbonized gray lol.. but a hunter green could be nice.

What's the interior color?

I've always liked green, you don't see them much and they look cool in the woods.
Red is high-vis if somebody hits you then you can say how can you possibly not see this truck. fwiw.
'97 is in good shape it wouldn't have mattered what color it was, but I do like the red, and it's not oxidized. That's one thing with red, if not cared for they can look really bad/faded/oxidized. Clearcoat probably helps with that.

Great questions guys.

The original color is silver.
The interior it black with grey inserts. Sport model
My wife and I are planning on moving to either north Georgia, South Carolina, or North Carolina sometime next year.
Prepwise I want to pull the badges, sand the flaking paint off, sand the surface rust that's forming, chemical treat the area where the rust was just to be sure, and take off the fender flares.

Original color will save you from doing doorjambs and inside fuel filler door. Also would be reflective when its hot out. My truck was dark blue originally. I put a silver box on it and wanted a silver roof since it doesnt have a/c. I realized I could do the bottom of the doors/fenders silver and middle of the bed blue and wound up with a old-school two-tone look. The top of the fender silver comes to a point in remincince of the starsky & hutch torino. I know- im old. lol

Silver is a good choice. Really all of them aren’t bad.

Dark blue metallic was my original color preference. My first Ranger was Deep Wedgewood Blue. My second vehicle, my 88, dark blue and tan Eddie Bauer. Dump truck and F-150 both dark blue, although the F-150 is temporarily Ford tractor blue. The 89 Eddie Bauer Bronco II that I had at college was dark blue/tan. Choptop originally was dark blue. Explorer is Eddie Bauer blue/gold.

My 92 is red and the clear coat is long gone. My 00 green Ranger is the Hunter Green and it kinda grew on me. Previous owner did black from the lower body line down and I kinda really like the idea. I’d like to fix some rust and repaint at some point, do the green with some extra metal flake and do a black with metal flake on the bottom.

I saw a Mazda B series in Hunter Green last week and liked how it went well with the black trim on the bumper.
(My wife is very Irish and likes green)

The light blue influence comes from the very first model I bought myself. A CJ-7 molded in that blue with black seats and top. Plus Huck has an old Ford pickup in the blue as well.

Silver might be the one I stick with for the reasons stayed by you good people and it does seem rarer in the N Georgia/Carolinas region.

Now to get quotes.

Fluorescent Pink. That's what colour you should paint it. it would be unique, and it'd be easy to find in the parking lot.
