As the title states I have some questions about the 4.0 swap. I have a 1985 BII with a 2.8L carbed, w/ 5spd manual, that is terrible for where I want to take it (Sierra Nevadas). I can buy a donor Explorer that is 4WD with a 5spd transmission. Most of the threads I've read are about 2.9s to 4.0s and not 2.8s. So what I want to know is how is the wiring on the drivers side firewall? I would like to keep the original dash if at all possible.

Sorry for making it kind of long, I'll appreciate any help, thanks!

The wiring should be about the same as a 2.9 to 4.0 swap. Most of the connections that have to be remade are hooking up gauges and wires that turn things on and off with the key. No actual engine management circuits run through the dash harness.

Here are some diagrams that will help you out. What year is the explorer? I may have those as well.

The donor vehicle will likely have a large round plug on the drivers side; you'll need to pull the wires out and splice them into whatever plugs the '85 has on the drivers side. It's been a while since I have worked on an '85 so I can't remember what it has.

Good luck
