Old submariner. Sold my 90 cherokee stroker motor, 4inch lift 32 in tires. my health failed
I couldn't get in the darn thing. Needed something lower. So looked online for two weeks for a ranger that didn't have 250,000 miles. Just bought 1999 XLT 120,000 miles. not a 4x4 I wanted but very clean. Enough said. Found this site to learn. Last car I modified, 62 chevy SS 409 4speed 4.88 r&p low 12's ET's. Be 80 next yr. Still enjoy tricking out old "new" ride!

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

Welcome to TRS. Ranger's are like the Eveready bunny, they just keep going and going. My 98 just passed 172,000, 3.0. Neither the engine or trans have ever been out of it.

btw, I'm 59 and have had my Ranger since January 2000. Had just 10,000+ miles on it when I bought it. Still has the factory starter and water pump. Had to change the power steering pump twice, the alternator for the first time in 2018.

Welcome to TRS :)

1999 was 2nd year of 3rd generation Ranger(4th generation for some, lol)

There were 3 engine options
2.5l 4cyl Lima
3.0l V6 Vulcan
4.0l OHV V6 Cologne, there was also a 4.0l SOHC V6 used in Rangers from 2001-2011

The 1999 2.5l and 3.0l used the 4R44E automatic trans, 4-speed
The 1999 4.0l used the 5R55E automatic, 5-speed
They are essentially the same transmission, the "5th gear" was added using software not a mechanical difference

You can get the 1999 Ranger brochure here: https://www.therangerstation.com/articles/ford-ranger-brochures/
To see options you have and don't have

And 1999 owners manual here: https://www.therangerstation.com/manuals/
Easier to search PDF manuals

You can look here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/axle_codes.shtml
To see what rear axle setup you have
