Well after not having anything fun to drive for a while, I decided it was time to put my '72 Maverick back on the road. Heres a few pics of whats going on.

The car in DD status about 5 years ago.

How it sits as of yesterday, stripped of motor and tranny.

Right before I tore it apart I took a quick little video.

http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a36/Outlawz4X4/?action=view&current=MVI_0890.flv

The stock offending oil-burning small block removed.

Why it burnt so much oil.

Rebuilt short block ready for some goodies.

Mostly assembled longblock waiting on pushrods and few other small things.

Probably two more weeks and itll be on the road. I'll post some more pics when finished and after the motor gets broke in some videos. :3gears:

nice looking Maverick. My Grandpa had a 71 maverick as a work car in the early 80's. It only had a straight 6, but I always thought the looks of the car was pretty decent.

I had a 71 straight 6 i bought for 100$ in 1997, spent 150 in parts to get it road worthy, did the work myself, drove it for a year then the starter messed up the fly wheel. coupled with the fact that the valve seals were shot. and the city i lived in ticketed me for letting it sit for A DAY. as abandoned. i was forced to junk it. not a bad car for a hundred dollars.

Nice vid. 302's always sound great with dual exhaust.

I had a '75 Maverick back in the early '80's.

Swapped out the inline six for a '68 model 302 v8.

It was a fun car, it used to scoot quite nicely.

my friend is currently restoring a '74. Had a 250-6, but its putting in an 80s 302 with Cleveland heads he got for $150. I'm doing the interior in it. Neat little cars for sure. He saw it at a dealer in southern Ohio, so we drove back down there the next week and he drove it back, got it for $1000, its in decent shape for a Maverick, and only has 45,000 miles.

I used to ride to work with a guy who had the 302 Boss version of the Maverick...it was very fast...and he was crazy...not a good combination, but I loved the car...very nice...I forget what the model was called...anyone recall the 302 version in Canada???

There was no Boss 302 version. They had a "Grabber" package which was basically just an appearence package.

It might've been called Grabber...but I know he had the 302 in it...bought it new like that IIRC...now I'm curious...time for a google!

I stand corrected...no Boss versions of the Maverick...and the 'special package' was called the Grabber...

A little update. I broke my ankle and wasn't able to work on it for some time. I'm back on it now. Almost finished with it. Just have to bolt up the drive accesories, drop in the radiator, install the new shifter, add fluids, and a few other very minor things. Should be up and running in no time. :3gears:

Cheap ass Summit headers needed a few swift hits with a hammer to fit correctly

WOW man, love the car,
I am insanely jealous of the lack of rust. My 75' Nova SS has cancerous rust of the underbelly.

I am also jealous/impressed at how clean under the hood is. jood gob!!
Digging the front liscene plate, hehe

Ha! That's the same block? Cleaned up nice Maverick!

Did you do anything (bumping up compression, head/rods, etc) with the motor?

Oh, and nice shavings. I guess the oil felt a lonely there in the pan!

No, it's not the same block. Here are the specs on it:

93 5.0 roller block
balanced rotating assembly
ARP rod bolts
Cloyes double roller timing set
TFS Twisted Wedge aluminum heads w/screw in studs and guideplates
Ford Motorsport 1.6 roller rockers
chromoly pushrods
Comp Cams XE262 grind 351W cam
Speed-Pro hypereutectic teflon coated pistons
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake w/600 CFM carb

I had the trans rebuilt (C4) with a shift kit and it has some where between a 2200-2400 RPM stall. The compression ratio is about a point lower than I would like (around 8.8-8.9:1) because the short block was built for a milder application with different heads. I still think it'll run pretty damn strong though, it's a fairly light car. Can't wait to drive it :headbang:
