That's weird. In Va labor is NOT taxed.

These states that have the high fuel taxes; Where do they think they are going to get revenue if everyone goes to electric cars?

Most states have never tried to tax labor charges because it's too easy to fudge them. Someone pays you cash for 10 hours of labor, but you report just 3 hours on the bill, you get the idea.

Florida is one of the few states that has stuck with doing that. Virginia, as far as I remember, has never seriously proposed a service tax (to give it the name I believe Florida uses).

I think to get around a gas tax on electric cars, don't they pay a super high registration bill?

I think they do... but I also think they get tax credits for electric.

When they become more mainstream... nothing is free.

According to Kelly Blue Book my '92 is only worth $2500 max. Lucky me lol. They've changed KBB, used to only go back 20 years, now it goes 30.

My registration last year was $89. Emissions inspection is every other year which you can get for about $35-45 if you look around. It costs much more in the large cities, but you can get it inspected anywhere in California. I usually get the inspection as I'm passing through rural areas or small towns.

texas is very expensive to live in. if its not bad in your state, i would stay there.

each county here sets their own vehicle emission requirements. like my county doesn't do anything more than a visual inspection for emissions and if you pass that and the safety inspection, the inspector logs in and approves you so the state will renew your vehicle registration. some counties in san antonio, houston, austin, dallas (basically all the democrat cities) require you to get your car hooked up to a machine and checked for emissions and then if you pass that and safety, they log in and you can register your vehicle each year.
Emissions in Texas is a state program that requires emissions testing in counties that exceeds air quality standards, and it is also required in many other areas across the country where air quality is a problem. Especially ozone. Ozone is nasty. The counties don't have a choice in the matter.

In Virginia hybrids and electric vehicles pay more. The amount isn't too crazy here, but apparently some states really jack it up.

There's a push to tax based on miles driven per year. My concern is government tracking your vehicle use and adding a mileage tax on top of other existing taxes. Imagine paying gas taxes at the pump and still paying a mileage tax on your Ranger.

Last proposals I saw were a mileage tax. How they get the mileage without people lying about it will be interesting. States that have annual safety inspections have an already set system in place. Those that don't, we"ll have to see.

Knowing the government, they would apply it to electric vehicles at first. Then hybrids to make sure they pay "their fair share". Then everyone will get hit and liquid fueled vehicles will still pay the fuel taxes.

A wireless transponder that uploads your mileage to receivers along highways will take care of that problem.

Just the right size to touch the ground.

Why not, they know everything else about you, what's another little peice of your freedom going to matter. That's pretty much how we got to the point we're at right now.
