So I have a Torsen in the rear from the factory. I want to put in a lunchbox locker. Aussie locker's website says it only works on open diffs. Does anyone know what I would have to do to install an Aussie locker? Will I have to completely remove the carrier and get an open diff from a junkyard to install the Aussie in?

My credo
If it ain't broke, break it.
You will have to replace the carrier.

Yes, you would have to remove the factory torsen, a factory open carrier from a junkyard would work.

So, something to double check. If you have a later model ranger with the factory torsen, you may have 31 spline axels in the back. A carrier for a 28 spline wouldn't work.

I'm sure new carriers are available that would work, or maybe a used open carrier from an explorer.

Definitely need to verify which rear end you have.

I'm sure I have a 31 spline from the information I got of this site. I plan on checking the pick-n-pull to see if I can find a carrier. I wheeled all of Uwharrie except for the two ledges on Daniel and haven't even lifted a tire so Will probably do more wheeling first before I decide on pulling the Torsen.

I thought all the Rangers with factory Torsen lockers were 31 spline? Am I losing my mind here?

I'm pretty sure all of the factory rears with torsens are 31 spline.

The junked open carrier also needs to be from a 31 spline. I think!

You're absolutely right. I misread your first post. Definitely worth paying attention to when grabbing a carrier.

Kinda sorta not really... L/S units (dunno if they were all torsen) were available for the 7.5, as well as both the 28 & 31 spline 8.8 at least at some point and vice versa with open carrier.

Finding a 28 spline doesn't mean it won't have a L/S and finding a 31 spline doesn't mean it will. From my understanding ALL the fx4 lvl 2's had 31 spline and torsen units so that's probably where that info is coming from.

Agreed on all points. But if it's a Torsen locker specifically (mechanical limited slip) and not just a generic clutch pack type limited slip, it should definitely be a 31 spline unit.

In any case your much better off trying to find an open 31 spline carrier in a panther car or mustang than in a ranger. Pretty much all the Panthers had 31 spline open carriers, rangers not so much.

Is that because it would be easier to find?
