Superduty axles

Hello

I was scanning my local offerup and noticed that there are a set of superduty axles out of an 01 truck.

I assume they are a sterling 10.5 rear and a dana 60 front, but I'm not entirely sure if the front is a dana 60 since they did put the 50s on the trucks aswell.

Could anyone tell me any information they know about these axles and if it would be a good swap to do on my 93 ranger or if I should spend my time looking into other axles.

I would be running leafs front and rear aswell so if anyone knows anything about putting leafs on the fronts of these trucks that would be appreciated.

Depends what you want to do with the truck. That's a lot of axle for a Ranger. There is another member here who has recently been breaking stuff due to hard landings and a heavy right foot. He's looking into using those kinds of axles. Most of us do really well with Dana 35 and ford 8.8". You're looking at a fair amount of custom fab work to use those axles. With enough time, money and tools, almost anything can be done.

Those should be pretty cheap.


As mentioned they are quite a bit of axle. And older for the modern era.

But if you want to run leaf springs they are perfect.

As usual....your intended use dictates best equipment options.


So...power...transmission..tire size . .and terrain are details that are needed to offer decent advice.

I'd probably stick to around stock power, my truck has the 4.0 ohv so it's real slow, maybe eventually put a 305 or a 351 but I'm more focused on drive train right now.

I was thinking maybe sticking a c5 tranny in it but I don't know what I'd run in it, I currently have an a4ld though, not sure if I will replace it.

I was also thinking running a 40x13.5 or a 42, it's all up in the air depending on what axles I am able to get my hands on, but if I was to go with the superduty axles I'd be running at least a 40 on the truck.

Where I spend most of my time wheeling it's all rocks, roots, and mud. I try to be slow and precise where I can be but there are definitely times where you just gotta give it the gas and be pretty hard on everything.

Another appeal of the superduty axles to me was how beefy the housing is for the axles, since around here you are usually hitting your axle on something at least one time in the day, regardless of how careful you are.

There is also a full float dana 60 for sale that's real cheap aswell, if I was to get that I would likely pair it with a 44 up front and some 37's, whether I was to get the 60 or the superduty axles, both axles, front and rear would be fully built, likely not in stock form.

The only 2001 F-series truck to have a D60 under the front is an F-350 dually (that doesn't exactly make for a practical swap). Anything else (single rear wheels) will have a D50.
I believe it was '02 when Ford began using the D60 under all F-250s & 350s.

Stick with the 60 (and 10.5" rear) if you have big plans for your truck. D44s aren't much more than a brake upgrade over the D35 (to make it significantly stronger would likely mean spending as much on it as you would on a SD D60). The 2005-up D60 I recall is more desirable, it has 35-spline shafts throughout (the earlier D60 shafts are 30-spline at the hubs).

'05 up axles are great, they got even better at some point too........14 or 15 maybe? Bigger u-joints in the shafts and they were already big.

Even the first gen super duty D50/60 are stupid strong for a Ranger application. Put better lockout hubs on them and do it to it.

Awesome, the ones I can get are 03 or 04 I believe.

The biggest problem for me is trying to figure out how I will make the front leaf mounts.

I came across this blog where he put front leads on his rig but there isn't many measurements and that stuff so I'm still struggling to figure out how I should make those mounts, I will get the axles though and start a build thread once I have the time to throw them on the truck.

Is there any transmission modifications anyone recommends doing prior to doing that, or do you think it'll hold up fine as long as I get some custom driveshafts.

I guess more of the modifications would have to happen to the transfer case, I said the wrong thing In the previous post.

Mounts are mounts. You can make it all bolt on with just a grinder and a drill....or have titanium tig welded art exhibits

Just have to select the right size channel, angle and 3x box.

Sping pack.....that's a tough one. I am running k5 rears currently.

I also run 42,s for certain situations ...

So you need the big heavy BASTAGES.

Yeah figuring out the pack is the biggest problem I can't figure out.

Since superduty axles have far bigger u joints than anything the ranger has.

Would I have to get a completely different case or would I be able to get bigger yokes for the case so that I could run the same size u joints as the axles have, or at least something similar.

Some of them have 1330 yokes. There are 1330 cross joints.

I am looking to buy another set of slider boxes for the front .. I sold my last set to a guy for his rear... Never got to use them to see if I like em. But shackles front I like better. Likely take a lot of trial and error...so I will have to have time to play around. It's way easier shackles front on the springs and front driveshaft that way.

Put it this way. I am set up to be able to drive in a 7 foot garage door on 42 iroks.
